THE JOURNEY OF AURORA - COCO KEELINGS ISLANDS, Part 2, by @marc-allaria (translated from French)
This is an authorized translation in English of a post in French by @marc-allaria: LE VOYAGE D'AURORA - STOP#10 - Episode 2...!
As my primary language is not English, there are probably some mistakes in my translation.
Remember that the person who speaks here is NOT me, Vincent Celier (@vcelier), but Marc Allaria (@marc-allaria), a French guy.
THE JOURNEY OF AURORA - COCO KEELINGS ISLAND
The Northern Islands
The group of islands composed of Direction Island, Prison Island, Horsburgh Island, and nearby islets of sand is undoubtedly the most beautiful place on the atoll. Horsburgh and Direction Islands had alternately housed plantations, homes and anti-aircraft guns. From all of these, there is almost nothing left. Hard to believe that at the beginning of the century, on Direction Island a large radio building was built. Bombed by the Japanese, then dismantled and thrown into the sea, there remains today absolutely nothing of this building.
Instead, thousands of coconut trees that only a few cyclones can still bring down twice a century. The place is of a beauty rarely reached. A long beach of perfect sand stretches for a few hundred meters, many coconut trees come all trunks skewed to bring the necessary shade to our hours of rest, the turquoise of the bay contrasts beautifully with the white and green shore. If paradise was an island, it could be called Direction Island. Some long-term sailors are not mistaken and come throughout the trade winds season to anchor and attach their hammock. Joshua Slocum, Bernard Moitessier, Antoine, and many anonymous, now Aurora (!)having marked their passage of signs fixed to some coconut trees, were for a few weeks the privileged hosts of this haven of peace.
A few hundred meters away, Prison Island is certainly the most incredible of the lagoon islands. A sand dune a few tens of meters wide by five meters high, planted with coconut trees closely grouped, seems to be the central jewel of this necklace of islands. A solitary walk around the islet will permeate deep within the visitor of the feeling of isolation emanating from the atoll. To watch the tide go down and the islands of sand around discover, there is probably no other occupation to find here. But this was clearly enough for the happiness of the few visitors who came to here for the duration of a tide.
