hw CONTEST 7.jpg

Hi friends!

To start with how to add shadows to our drawings, we will do several easy and simple exercises to understand how it works.

The Homework Contest

In this homework, I would like to ask you to do this exercise which is to draw three or more different shapes in different positions to gain more confidence in using vanishing lines in a two-point perspective or one-point perspective with a high eye level. This homework is related to the previous Masterclass 60 Masterclass so I advise you to read it if you haven't already.

Start by quickly sketching some shapes to define their position and the height of the horizon line.
01.jpg

Then, over our sketch, we draw the helplines that define the two vanishing points and the eye-level line to obtain a more precise drawing.
We get the first shape.
Note that the vanishing lines at the left fall out of the drawing sheet. If you don't know how to draw it, see the previous lesson.55-Lesson
02.jpg

Repeat the same process to draw the next shape.
Keep in mind that the vanishing lines must cross the same horizon line that we have already defined but not necessarily at the same point defined for the previous shape, remember that each object can have different vanishing points than the others in the same composition.
03.jpg

We get the second shape.
04.jpg

Repeat the same process as above once again to draw this new shape.
Once again, the vanishing lines will cross the eye-level line at new points.
05.jpg

We have drawn the three figures for our exercise.
06.jpg

Here the diagonal lines indicate the height of the sun in the sky given by the inclination of the rays on the ground.
This is my random decision, you can decide to give another tilt to the sun's rays.
06a.jpg

Note that the crossover point between the diagonal helplines representing the sun's rays and the horizontal helplines representing the ground will define the shadows.
The horizontal helplines must intersect all the bottom vertices of the cubes and the sunray helplines must intersect all the top vertices of the shapes. To achieve this it is mandatory to draw the helplines on the back of the shapes.
06b.jpg

I've drawn red dots here to indicate the intersections that will define the edge of the shadows.
06bb.jpg

I drew the border here in red so that it is visible to you. The portion drawn behind the cubes will be invisible, obviously.
06c.jpg

I let you observe all the helplines and the shadows before erasing them so you can study them.

The finished exercise.

I wish you a very nice day and good exercise!

And if you like to colour your drawings, I recommend the interesting and useful Color and Light classes of @fumansiu whose concepts you can apply both with traditional and digital techniques.

That is very interesting how to find the size of shadow and how to understand the direction of lines. In meantime I have exercised on the previous my work with two-point perspective and drew few more shapes. It is interesting game, seems like one drawing is getting more and more complex.

OK 👍

One of the more difficult things to figure out in drawing and painting is exactly this. Shadows can be extremely difficult to place without the knowledge of how to do so. Thank you for this lesson!

I agree with you!

thank you very much! I really appreciate your support.

If someone decides to do this task, he will have to find many previous lessons. It's like skipping school. Subsequent tasks become more and more difficult.
It's very good that you give links to previous lessons.

I wish success to everyone who participates in the art school.

If someone really finds it interesting and wants to learn, they will. Thank you for commenting.

Hi Jorge, I have tried this Homework, looks like there are some areas of difficulties with the shapes that I have chosen:
