Drawing like a pro - 7, a drawing for charity (Power up 100%)

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago

Hi friends!

As I have promised you, I will try to complement the drawing lessons with some nice or interesting narratives related to the craft of drawing.

--------------------------------------------------------

Florence - Italy, in the early 16th century, where great artists like Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci amongst many others lived and worked.
Members of a charity organization arrive at Leonardo's atelier to ask him to donate some work to contribute to an auction to help people in need.
They say that Leonardo took a sheet of paper, quickly drew a freehand circle on the sheet and gave it to charity. Puzzled they received the drawing and angry and disappointed they went to visit Michelangelo and told him "look what Leonardo has given us for charity" expressing their annoyance.
Michelangelo took the sheet with the circle drawn by Leonardo, he also took a pencil and marked the centre of the circle with a cross, giving back the drawing to these people.
As expected, they were outraged at such an insignificant donation from these two great artists and it seems that because of the shame of feeling mocked, this drawing was not even put up for auction.

The drawing was forgotten for a long time until it fell into the hands of some art experts who, seeing that the circle seemed to be extremely well-drawn, decided to measure it with a drawing compass, verifying that it not only looked very well drawn but that it was a perfect circumference and also the cross drawn by Michelangelo was in the exact centre of the circle.
Evidently, this led to valuing this "collective" work of these two great artists in its true dimension, turning it into an artistic work highly coveted by collectors. Finally, it is said that this drawing is in the Vatican and is currently part of the secret collection owned by the Church.

Myth or truth? I don't know, I just keep the story that I find nice and interesting to analyze.

Both, Leonardo and Michelangelo were aware of their value as artists, a consequence of the many years of drawing as the fundamental basis of all their projects. So many years of constant practice (both began their artistic training when they were just teenagers) sharpened their visual senses and their muscle memory, which allowed them to draw with great mastery.
Unfortunately, the members of that charity, although they knew the value that a work of these artists could have, they did not understand what that "simple" drawing represented, they did not understand that what they had received was a valuable testimony of a life of study and artistic practice.

I suggest you practice drawing circles freehand, following the tips I've described in previous posts.
It may be useless to you right now but later you'll be glad you've built into your senses and
muscle memory the ability to draw with ease and fluidity.
Even if you can't make perfect circles, the skill you've gained to master drawing will always pay off.

--------------------------------------------------------

The objective of these drawing lessons that I started thanks to the encouragement and support of @bambuka is to provide you with the knowledge of the craft of drawing with the tools, materials, techniques, and my thoughts about the act of drawing that will allow you to draw what you want professionally.

The road is long but full of beautiful things if you want to learn what I have learned from other artists and draftsmen.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for the story of the great artist's drawing, I didn't know it :)
Yes, muscle memory is hard to overestimate.

Hi bambuka! Thanks to you for reading.
I believe the story is more a myth than a truth.

Very often, myths turn out to be true, and what was considered the true truth ... alas)

Thank you very much!

I've been going though the studies and promised myself that I wouldn't comment on anyone except the recent but I just couldn't walk pass this one. I'm inspired. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi @ezunjoshy, thanks to you for stopping by and commenting!
