[Short Story] - The Slaughterhouse - part 5 - John's backstory
and click here for part 3 written by @braveheart29
"What the-..." John Svashta muttered to himself, just standing out there on the porch wearing nothing but his white underwear and tank top.
He couldn't tell whether he was dreaming, hallucinating, or both. There was just no way he could believe his eyes.
"An old fart riding a flying cow? Not happening!" He shook his head and laughed it off. "Perhaps I should've gone easier on the whiskey," he said as he went back inside to catch some sleep. He had been celebrating the purchase of his new car with his friends that night.
In the morning, just as he was on his way to the barn to do his everyday morning routine of milking the cows he was greeted by the sight of his brand new Charger covered in partly dried manure.
John dropped the stool he was carrying and blinked about 50 times as if that would make the brown potty go away. He rushed to the car to check the damage and immediately recognised the stinky ooze as cow dung.
Still feeling lightheaded from the booze last night and the fact he just woke up, he needed quite some time to put together the pieces of the puzzle.
"I'll be damned! I did see a flying cow last night!" He realised how stupid that sounded the moment he said it out loud so he tried to come up with a different explanation. "Or maybe it was Jim. That prick!"
Jim was a neighbouring farmer to John Svashta and they were in a conflict for as long as they knew of each other's existence.
Jim was one of the new generation of cattle breeders. Everything on his farm was motorized, there was no human contact needed with any of the animals at any point from birth to slaughter. He hated the fact that John's cattle sold for a much higher price than his cattle, despite the fact John only had a maximum of 50 cows at a time and Jim had upwards of a thousand. Svashta always thought to himself that because of the lack of physical work, Jim got bored and had to find something to pass the time. It just so happened that it was easiest to pour out the excess energy on the person closest to him, which was his neighbour John. Jim had done many things to upset John Svashta before. He slashed the tires on his car, set his scarecrow on fire, bought all the corn seeds on the market so there wouldn't be any left for John and now apparently even dumped a bucket full of cow poop onto his new car.
John Svashta on the other hand was a traditional farmer who inherited the land after his father, Jack Svashta. John, as his father before him, tended every single cow he had and showed each love and appreciation. Many times he even cried himself to sleep when he remembered all of his loving cows will one day be sold off to the slaughterhouse. He didn't want to sell them, but it was his only means of survival. The milk from 50 cows wasn't enough to keep the lights on and his neighbour Jim made sure he made minimum profit – if any – with the crops. If it wasn't for family tradition and the renowned trademark Svashta, he wouldn't have even made enough money selling the cows for slaughter.
John went to his tool shed to get the pressure washer and then started washing the car he had just bought.
The bright red Charger with black stripes was a car John wanted ever since he was a toddler. He wanted the same toy – the Charger – each and every Christmas and once he grew too old for presents, he treated himself to a toy car every year. 37 toy cars later, he finally decided to buy himself the real deal and he couldn't have been more happy about it. After years of dreaming about it, the car was finally parked in his driveway and it was everything he was hoping it would be.
With the car sparkly clean, John had set off to the barn to check on the cows and tend to them.

Nice! Now shall we have another Clarabelle story next? I shall put on my thinking cap. I think Clarabelle May want to pay John another visit.
Or course we will write more about Clarabelle! :D
I've just thrown the ball in your court now ;D haha :D Oh and John is yet to learn that one of the cows is missing.... Perhaps Jim "stole" her to present her as his own and try to raise the price of his own cattle? Who knows. :P
