Hydrogen Drum Machine - Pitch Shifting
Hydrogen lets us change the pitches of our drum sounds. They can be great for creating our own unique sound.
In the rhythm editor window we are given two ways to enter and edit rhythms. You can find these with the Input button on the rhythm editor window.
The first way to enter note is the 'drum' option. This lets us enter a single dot for a drum sound on the representing each percussion instrument.
The second way of entering drum sounds is in 'keyboard' option. In this window you select the instrument you want to work with on the left then you can place your dot on the keyboard representation. Left to right represents the placement in time and up and down represents the pitch of your percussion sound.
What do you mean pitch? Good question. Hydrogen allows us to change the pitch of our percussion sounds. If you would like your bass drum to sound a little lower then move the dot to a lower position on the keyboard window. This can be done for most instrument sounds in Hydrogen.
Being able to change the pitch of instrument sounds can be a great advantage when making unique exciting drum parts. Varying the pitch of your hi-hat notes can make your part sound much more human. Alternating pitches on fast bass drum parts can sound like a double kick peddle. They is a great tool putting real world sounds into your drum tracks.
I encourage you to spend time experimenting with Hydrogen to get used to composing your rhythms. You can make some unique and exciting rhythms by exploring how these rhythmic divisions interact. Be sure to save your work often and keep your beats in an organized folder.
