Helm is not only a sound engine, it is also a performance synth. We are given a few tools to help us use Helm as a great performance synth.

Connect a MIDI keyboard to Helm and you have a great software synth for performing. Helm gives us some tools to help us get the most out of performing. In this video we will have a look at Portamento and Legato.

Normally when we play consecutive notes on a keyboard each not plays independent of the previous note. With Portamento there is slide or 'glissando' between notes. Play a C then a D and there will be a slide from the C to the D. Increasing and decreasing Portamento will accentuate that slide. On Helm's Portamento there is also an Auto (Aut) selection. When this is on Portamento will only occur when a new note is played before the previous note has been released. If the first note is released before the second note is played then there will be no Portamento.

Legato controls some of the modulators, such as LFO and Modulation Envelope. When Legato is off and the maximum number of 'voices' have been reached any new voices will play while initializing the modulation tools from new. With Legato engaged any new notes played after the maximum number of voices are reached will not reset these modulators. This is a very subtle control, but can have its uses.
