Hydrogen Drum Machine - Rhythmic Resolution
Hydrogen has a very simple tool for creating and editing drum beats. In this tutorial we will have a close look at how we work with musical meter in Hydrogen
As we have seen in another tutorial, entering notes in Hydrogen's rhythm editor is very easy. We can click where we want to notes to go. But we need to choose a division of the meter so that Hydrogen knows the duration of the of the notes we want. This is done with Resolution.
On the rhythm editor window you will see a pull down menu called Resolution. This provides us with several rhythmic options.
These rhythmic options let us choose the note durations available to us. If we choose '4' then we will only be able to place a note on the quarter note value. Choose '8' and we can place notes on the quarter and eigth note values and subsequently up through all the smaller rhythmic divisions. We are also able to use triplet divisions as indicated with 'T.'
Hydrogen lets us choose the length of the overall rhythm loop with the Size pull down menu. For some reason if you wish to have a 4-beat pattern you must choose a size of 8. If you want a 3-beat pattern you must choose 6. It is unclear why you must choose double the number of beats you want, but that is how it works.
I encourage you to spend time experimenting with Hydrogen to get used to composing your rhythms. You can make some unique and exciting rhythms by exploring how these rhythmic divisions interact. Be sure to save your work often and keep your beats in an organized folder.
Hydrogen is an open source application, which means that it is free for everyone to use. Please consider going to the developers' website and show your support for the project - http://www.hydrogen-music.org/
I hope you enjoy this tutorial. If you have any specific questions for me feel free to leave it in the comments of this post and I will do my best to get back to you with an answer.
Cheers,
