Helm Software Synth - Stutter

Stutter

Stutter does just what you would think it does - It repeats.

The Stutter module in Helm has some similarities to the Delay function, but offers some different options. Where Delay repeats the entire patch sound, Stutter samples a portion of the sound and repeats it.

Stutter allows us to select a specific portion of a patch's sound starting from the beginning of the sound and use it as our repeated sound. For example, you may want the first 45 milliseconds of the sound repeated. It is a very nice feature.

There are three controls in Stutter: Frequency, Resample and Softness.

Frequency controls the rate of the repeat. This is like many other modules in Helm and is ultimately governed by the BPM or metronome built in Helm. You can choose a rate based on musical metre or a specific time length.

Resample controls the portion of sound that will be resampled and repeated. Again, this is controlled by Helm's internal metronome. You can select any amount of length of the original sound's duration for repeating.

Softness provides us with a way to soften the edge of the repeated sounds' beginning and end. By raising the softness the sounds will fade-out and fade-in between each repeat. Lowing Softness will sharpen the beginning and end of the sound repeats.

As with all the modules in Helm, Stutter is meant to be used in coordination with other modules to create unique sounds. Explore what this and all the other modules have to offer you.

I hope you have enjoyed this video tutorial on Helm. There will be more tutorials to follow.
