Helm Software Synth - How to use Reverb

The makers of the open source synth Helm has baked in a great little Delay module for you to use when programming your sounds.

The delay in Helm is very straightforward to use and will take you no time to master.

Delay and Reverb are two effects that are at the core of sound design and recording. As you explore Helm's Delay module keep in mind that it can be used hand-in-hand with Reverb.

Helm's Delay has 3 controls: Frequency, Feedback and Mix.

First Frequency, it is controlled by time value selections. You can choose actual times in seconds and decimals of. You can also choose musical metre divisions, such as quarter notes, half notes, etc. When using metric devisions such as these then Helm's built in metronome, "BPM" ultimately controls the speed. BPM or beats per minute tells Helm how fast the tempo needs to be and in turn controls the speed of the Delay unit.

Feedback controls the length of time it will take for the echoed sounds to fade away. The more you rotate to left of right the longer more echoed sounds and longer the time to fade away.

Mix is the difference in volume of the original sound and the new delayed sounds. 0% has all original sound and no delayed sound. 100% has all delayed sound and none of the original.

Delay is a great effect and it is very useful to have it built into Helm. Explore the effect and in no time you will find innovative ways to incorporate it into your new music.

The Delay module in Helm is very simple and does not offer us many variables to work with. If you require more options you can have a look at the Echo module available in the open source audio recorder/editor Audacity. It is not a lot more complex than Helm's, but it is another option. I have done a complete video tutorial on how to use Audacity's Delay module here - How to use Delay in Audacity - Video Tutorial

I hope you have enjoyed this video tutorial on Helm. There will be more tutorials to follow.
Cheers,

Most critical effect in any of my synth compositions!! Triplet delay is step one and likely why I own about six different delay pedals...none of which touch my Space Echo (Makenoise echophon being a notable exception for sound design purposes. Unsurpassed.)

I digress. Thanks for another killer video. Keen to throw Helm on the laptop for next road trip. Way too reliant on serum and I love that helm is open source!

Space Echo!!!!????? I am so envious !! :) lol I would love one of those bad boys! Do you have any examples to share with us?

Look at these minds coming together! I have Helm in the old arsenal, but rarely use it, maybe I need to bust it out...

For sure. It is a nice synth. I'd love to hear some of your music with this :)
