Chapter Eighty Seven

"Have you thought about who you want to go to prom with?" Sonya asked Ary, as they sat at their usual table in the library.

Ary's brows drew in, "Um...No, probably going solo."

Sonya made a face, "You can't do that, it's your senior prom, besides I know someone who wants to ask you." She gave her a mischievous look.

Ary took the bait to appease her. "Oh yeah? Who?"

"Randy Harris," she beamed, "which would be so perfect because his friend Tim asked me and I said yes! We could double, or triple actually, since I'm sure Andie and Grant would ride with us...He's getting a limo!"

Ary couldn't help but smile at her exuberance, but there was no way she was going to prom with anyone, Grayson would have a coronary. "I swore off dating for the rest of the year, remember?" She said gently.

"Oh come on," Sonya pouted, "it's not like you have to kiss the guy, just dance with him a few times. Besides, he's cute, and I'm sure Grayson won't be going solo, so if you do it will look like you're still pining for him, but if you show up with Randy then maybe he'll even be jealous!"

"What, I'm not allowed in the limo without a date?" She cast her an injured look and Sonya rolled her eyes.

"I didn't say that, but if you turn Randy down he'll ask someone else, then there might not be room, and I happen to know he recently broke up with his girlfriend, so it's perfect!"

Ary shook her head, smiling at that logic. She had a feeling Sonya would keep pressing so she said, "I'll think about it."

"Yay! But don't think too long, he'll probably ask you soon."

"You do realize prom is almost two months away, right?"

"Yeah, but you have to get a dress and he has to rent a tux, it's important to get these things straight ahead of time."

Ary laughed, then pursed her lips, "You know, if Andie were sitting here when you made the whole 'make Grayson jealous' comment she would have bit your head off."

Sonya crossed her eyes, "Duh! I'm not stupid. But between us, I think she's being insensitive. You must still think about him, right? It sucks that you can't talk about it because of how she'll react. She's in her glory because she thinks you're totally over him, but I know you don't talk about it because she'll be a beotch if you do, so if you ever want to talk about it, I’m here for you.”

Ary shook her head, "No thanks, but I appreciate the offer." Inwardly she winced. She kept telling herself she wasn’t really lying to them, just omitting a few things. A few big things granted, so in actuality she was grateful Andie felt the way she did because he rarely came up, and she was terrible at lying when asked directly.

"Well okay, but if you ever do, I'm here."

She nodded, then gave her a look of warning as Andie walked through the door of the library.

"Hey girlies, what are you up to?" She asked, dropping in the seat next to Ary.

"We were discussing prom, and I got Ary to agree to consider accepting Randy's invitation."

"Oh you did, did you?" Andie smiled, "Well I think it's a grand idea."

Ary smirked. Of course she does. Her friend wouldn't truly stop worrying about Grayson until Ary had moved on to someone else. But she'd been very clear about not wanting to date for the rest of the year, and mostly Andie had respected that.

"So does ‘You'll think about it’ actually mean ‘You'll think about it’, or were you just getting Sonya off your case?"

Damn her. Once again she was grateful Andie equated Grayson with a swearword, because direct questions were a particular specialty of hers. "It means...You know how I feel about dating right now."

"Oh come on, it's one night of dinner and dancing, besides he's getting over someone too," Andie pressed.

Ary rolled her eyes, "Yeah, Sonya mentioned that, and I pointed out that prom is two months away, which brings up a point; how do you know he won't get back with his ex before then?"

"Oh no," Sonya said immediately, "They are definitely not getting back together. She started dating someone behind Randy’s back, and she's with the guy now. Even if she broke up with the new guy, Randy wants nothing to do with her, and besides it's less than two months away. This is the middle of March you know, prom is the beginning of May."

Wow, was it that soon? Time was flying by, which for the most part was a good thing and she was incredibly excited, but it also meant she had to figure out how she was going to let everyone know she was fine after she left. Nanna especially, and the thought of it made her stomach twist in knots.

"What's that look for?" Andie asked.

Damn, why hadn't she ever learned a good poker face? "I was just thinking that graduation is coming up really fast, and mostly I can't wait, but it's also a little intimidating."

"The ceremony?" Sonya asked, her brow furrowing.

Andie laughed, "For being a smart girl, you are such a ditz sometimes. No, she means the whole going out into the world, childhood officially being over thing."

Not exactly, but that explanation would do, Ary thought. Lies of omission, easy as pie.

"Oh that's nothing to be afraid of," Sonya declared, "we still have college before the real world becomes an issue."

"Speaking of, have you decided if you're going to SCC?" Andie asked Ary.

Ary shook her head slowly, "Still undecided."

"I wish you could go to Brown with us," Andie commented, not for the first time.

Ary nodded. Andie and Sonya had both been accepted, though in Sonya's case it seemed like a big waste of time and money since she wanted to make a career out of cutting hair. Apparently her parents hoped she would change her mind over the next four years.

"I totally wish you could," Sonya agreed, "but at least if you go to SCC you can come visit us all the time, it's not that far. And we can go to each other's dorm parties."

Ary managed to smile, though she knew that wasn't going to happen. She wasn't sure when she'd be able to see them again...No, she thought sternly, you are absolutely not going to think about that right now. That was all she needed, she'd be crying in no time.

The bell rang and they gathered their things to head to the lounge.

"By the way," Andie said as they filed out the door, "the Saint Patty's party at my house this Saturday is going to be huge, and I do mean huge. Grant's getting a keg and he's invited everybody and their brother."

"Awesome!" Sonya exclaimed.

"Cool," Ary agreed. She was actually looking forward to getting drunk and dancing her butt of with the girls, but not as much as she was looking forward to tomorrow. Wednesday, one of her two guaranteed nights with Grayson. She smiled as they descended the stairs.

Personally, I don't really get what the big deal is about prom. Maybe it isn't as big of an event here? Haha! I remember dancing with more than 20 women to our grad ball, and the girl I was courting back then didn't mind it at all. If Grayson has a problem with Ary going to prom with someone else, then he still isn't over himself.

I think there will be a spanner in the works x

Methinks daddy may get a tad suspicious....

The thing with secrets, they are so secretive. Arrgh!

@dreemit such a lovely story.. this novel by linnet seems to be very good.

@dreemit you were flagged by a worthless gang of trolls, so, I gave you an upvote to counteract it! Enjoy!!
