Chapter Seventy Six

"Grayson!" His father greeted, then held up a hand as he answered a call.

Grayson dropped on the leather sofa, relieved to be back on home turf. Jet lag was a bitch. Well that and the series of events he'd attended in the last several days which had left him physically and mentally exhausted.

James put the phone down on his desk and came around it, sitting on the edge. "So," he beamed, "it seems that my son is the talk of the town. Handsome, intelligent, witty, charming; a young man who will fill his father's shoes without missing a beat; and there was a particular mention of an answer to the question of why you have attended a public school rather than taking advantage of the many private schools at your disposal. Do me a favor and recount for me your reply."

Grayson smiled faintly before affecting the way of speech he'd adopted for certain social events. "Well, my father believed it would give me an advantage, one that few, if any, in our social class would ever have; the ability to truly understand those who will one day be in my employ; to comprehend their motivations and see firsthand the illogically romantic ideals that most often drives them. In his life he has witnessed those who share our elite positions whom upon first learning of these notions demonstrated a weakness that was sadly exploited. He felt it would give me an edge to be exposed to this at a younger age."

His father clapped his hands together. "Well-done Grayson. Stellar job. The stock of Teller communications and Global technologies has risen twenty-two percent in the last forty-eight hours, an astronomical increase in such a short time, and you are directly responsible. So now we are going to discuss your new life strategies."

"First off I have decided that you will continue to have professional help twice a week as you did in Europe, as it appears it does wonders for your concentration. And these particular women are not only clean, but unable to reproduce, which means that you'll enjoy the full benefits of what a female body can do for you. Secondly, I've decided school has become obsolete, so I'm hiring a tutor. And lastly, and I'm sure you'll be pleased by this development, I have lured Jason from his activities overseas and he will be staying with us until you begin Harvard next fall."

Grayson managed to keep the revulsion off his face with the first bit of news, as far as the second? He thought furiously. "I need to finish high school." He stated.

"Oh? Why is that?

"Because those to whom I sold the reason I had for attending public school will be expecting it. It's a matter of curiosity for them, and it will keep me the ‘Talk of the town,’ as you put it."

James narrowed his eyes slightly. "This wouldn't have anything to do with a certain girl would it? Because I recall you telling me that you were clear when we last spoke about it."

Grayson smirked, "Of course not. And I believe my words were 'crystal clear'. The only reason I wanted to continue that particular game was because I couldn't shake the feeling of failure. But you assured me that wasn't the case, and after careful contemplation I decided I agree. My time is far too valuable to waste on changing the stubborn faith of a silly girl. Perhaps had I met her a couple of years ago it would be different, but now? I have bigger fish to fry."

James nodded, smiling in satisfaction. "That you do."

Grayson cocked his head to the side, "But I am curious, why would Jay give up the scene in Europe to hang out with a high school kid?"

James smile widened. "Well it seems that he has grown quite fond of you in the past couple of weeks, that he sees himself as a mentor of sorts."

Grayson nodded slowly. "Well he certainly opened my eyes to a few things."

"And there will be functions for you to attend even before the summer comes, and the two of you do well as a team," James continued, then as Grayson stifled a yawn he decided to cut things short. "Okay, I can see that you're tired, I suggest you get some sleep. Come see me tomorrow so we can discuss things further."

Grayson nodded and stood, giving his father a one-handed salute as he exited the study.

Once he reached his bedroom suite he headed straight for the bathroom, turning the water on in the tub. He undressed and stood in front of his mirror, staring into his own eyes, trying to determine what could be seen there. All kinds of things...and nothing if he so desired.

Jay was coming to live with them. He was not pleased by this development. In fact, the opposite sentiment could be applied, because over the past week he had seen through ‘his buddy's’ act, and was pretty damn certain he was a spy. One his father had hired to fill him in on what he couldn't determine from monitoring Grayson's social media. Supposedly Jason was like him, an only child from the same background whose parents had died in a boating accident years before. And perhaps that was true, but Grayson had a feeling that most things Jason had “shared” about his past was utter bullshit.

He walked back to the tub and stepped in, sinking into the hot water and laying his head back against the porcelain. Ary. A stab of pain accompanied the thought of her. He could almost feel her in there with him, her legs tangling with his, the silkiness of her skin as he ran his hands over her body. The sound of her wind chime style giggle when he grabbed her foot and threatened to tickle it. Pulling her toward him, tasting her perfect pink nipples.

Sliding into her, the only thing that had ever made him feel like he was coming home. He closed his burning eyes and pictured her the first time he'd noticed her. Those beautiful eyes. Then later when he'd looked into them as he'd taken her innocence.

He spent the next hour remembering, and by the time he got out of the tub he was wrinkled. He toweled off and stood before the mirror again. "It's enough now, no more of this," he told himself. "Let her go." He swallowed hard, forcing the lump down his throat and gripped the edge of the sink leaning toward himself. "Let. Her. Go." He stared himself down until his eyes lost all semblance of emotion before turning toward his bedroom.

Sort:

His father is horrid , just take the leap and get away from him !

Is it wrong for me to think that they should just go their own way? Admittedly, I haven't truly grasped the whole "good girl tries to redeem a bad boy" trope no matter how many times I've seen it. Ary deserves so much better than Grayson. Maybe it's just me, but I really hate those undecisive types. Ary is the one who should be dedicating her precious time on other endeavors. She has the stain of Grayson etched in her, but that doesn't mean she has to go live with it. Live and learn, girl.
