How I Survived My First Month on Steem

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Good morning, afternoon, evening ocean-folk,

Rather than take this time of reflection to outline my accomplishments or highlights over my first month on the Steem platform, I want to use this space to note the people, art and experiences that have kept me here and helped me find places of true community and family.

Peers:

Joining Steem was an intimidating affair for me, quickly feeling like I left any stability or reputation I had built in other corners of the interwebs for this new, foreign realm the inner workings of which were still shrouded in a fog of secrecy to me.

What helped me most navigate this new, overwhleming ocean, was the knowledge I was not navigating it alone; in fact, I was navigating it with:

  1. @themadrunnah, a macabre poet who, in spite of his writing geared toward instilling a sense of unease and existential dread, is one of the most pleasant people you'll ever meet. His haiku focus has left much of his poetic exploration in bite size readables on his blog, and it's been fun to grow with him. Paradise, a Tri-o-let form poem of his - the form alone is worth checking out!

  2. @poetrybyjeremy, a poet and writer whose boundless enthusiasm is only met by his seemingly boundless output. He has a book he's working on now, so if you're enjoying his writings, keep an eye out for it! Peep his blog on his first 30 days, linked here!

  3. @whoshim, a third poet who has, as iron sharpens iron, been a great friend who inspires me to continue to grow as a writer. All his recent pieces are worth a read, but do check out The Valley of Kings which channels the power and energy still permeating through the annuals of history.

  4. @bennettitalia, who I'm only just starting to connect and become fast friends with, which is exciting because look at the Daily Poem project he's doing as well as this bomb ass doodle! Super excited to learn alongside this guy and connect more.

Paradise:

Anyone who read through my introduction post will have seen that inclusive communities mean the whole world to me. In my first 30 days of Steeming vegetables, I've found that community in @IsleofWrite. It's been a place of refuge when I need it, encouragement, sharing of best practices, wisdom, and family and community.

  1. @jrhughes, the first person I ever met on the Isle, JR greeted me with a smile and an instant feeling of acceptance into a community built to support. She has two projects right now that I'm enjoying following in the restoration of her house, a gorgeous older property - and A Bloody Modern Fairytale which is a suspense, surreal horror with some of the most natural exposition you'll ever read!

  2. @authorofthings, is a mini hero of mine. Her natural state of self-depreciation in regards to her writing is reflective of her striving for equal parts grace and strength in everything she does. Her recent love poem Unafraid and more honest than a bullet personal narrative Unraveling are wonderful representations of both her skill as an author (of things) and strength as person.

  3. @geke, things I write just wouldn't be as buttoned-up and presentable if it weren't for @geke lending her expert editors eye to much of my output. Her non-partisan posts highlighting conflicts of interest in present US politics are so important! Especially in a media climate that, by necessity, often gets distracted by easier to sell high-drama. She also has a long running Sustainability for Kids that just wrapped up, but are very much still worth your read!

  4. @carolkean, is one of the warmest souls I've encountered in my time here. She's constantly promoting the works of others, encouraging established authors to join the blockchain, and climbs mountains to celebrate the success of all, shouting so the heavens hear! I haven't been able to read much of her work outside of some of the outstanding updates she rotates to provide for @theIsleofWrite, but I think her recent Ladybug Haiku is indicative of both her presentness and appreciation of beauty, and her encouraging nature.

  5. @geekorner, I'm not sure whether friend, mentor, confidant or catte brother in arms works better, so... all the above? Guy's unabashed honesty in all interaction has led to a lot of growth for me, both on steem, and as a writer. Some of my pieces I'm most excited about that I'm working on right now are as exciting as they are because of detailed notes from this guy, Guy. @geekorner is a poet who often leverages universal emotions and ideals, establishes core foundational roles and traits for them, often with a generous amount of allusion, and ties everything together to ensure an always impactful close that carries true meaning and message.
His most recent piece Scar Tissue is a great example, the dichotomic nature of needing to outgrow our scars to develop, but our scars also being the entities that limit our growth. Every read of his is insightful, and his poetic output coupled with the quality is staggering!

Patrons

I'm going to break my premise I started this post with to quickly brag on myself a bit? I have received 2 curies (Ode to an Ancient Statue poem | Best Dark Ambience of 2017), 2 mini-curies (Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto's 'Glass' part of my New Release Friday series | My tribute to Jóhann Jóhannsson, Modern Classical visionary and personal hero) and I couldn't be more thankful to all who have supported and encouraged in my content creation.

Every comment and recognition of the value any post has added means the whole world to me, and I want to recognize @eyedreemit for being one of my earliest readers, @moeknows for his consistently insightful comments and passion for poetic community growth here on Steem, as well as new friends @c0ff33a and @saffisara for their encouragement and kind words.

And my first recognition I ever received on the platform came from @sunravelme, a curator who has introduced me to so many writers here on Steem who are now staple reads, a talented poet in her own right (Reflecting on an Uprooted Tree), and a positive ray of encouragement and sunshine in all she does from highlighting the difficulties and giving the opportunity to support the homeless in her hometown to bestowing the joy of reading! to her students.

Passions

Some of the most astounding art I've seen in my last 30 days (not already covered above) are below. That pieces of this quality exist on my timeline is a dream and I feel blessed to be in the audience.

The metal moshing, radio hosting, photographer, writer, the always helpful @crimsonclad posted this poetic prose, wash the bones, complete with her own Icelandic photography to devastating affect, documenting an instance where the self touches the universe.

Every piece @alexandravart shares could be here, but I have chosen her feature of her artwork relative to Picasso (comparison) and @stellabelle because it showcases unique relationships in connection and direction.
@diebitch's poem, Illusion of Darkness, an overcoming of the fear of the unknown in beautiful verse.
Published author, @yahialababidi's post promoting his new book, Where Epics Fail, a collection of aphorisms and insights for the modern world citizen.

Aphorisms respect the wisdom of silence by disturbing it, but briefly.
Paths are also relationships, to be meaningful they require fidelity.

are two such aphorisms I hope to carry in my rib cage forever.

@girlwithoutwings recorded this amazing poetic journey / performance and paired it with a self-narrative on persevering through, and ultimately transcending hardship. It's one part heartbreaking, two parts inspiring, and adds new weight to her poem, On Ravendale Hill.

and on and on - maybe I will get into this curating thing some day...

Past, Present and Future

I don't know what the future holds for me on this platform, but I'm excited by the passion and talent showcased by all that I meet and the opportunity to continue to connect with like minded artists, be inspired, and always always the opportunity to learn.

I'm going to continue to feature at least one new album a week in my New Release Friday series, genres will continue to span the gamut, as they have. I'll also continue to try and get a poem a week - have a lot of ideas now, but I always take so much time on my edits and revisions that I make no promises.

I need to get back to completing my Top Albums of 2017 lists, so expect me to get back on to the one a week schedule until I cover all the genres I feel I listened to enough material in last year to have an educated enough view of the scene that my thoughts might provide value and fun new listens to interested new listeners.

As I flow in and out of RL work loads, and potentially leave my current freelancing for full-time in the near future? we'll see how it affects everything, but I just want to say that the support and camaraderie that I have experienced in my extremely short time here on Steem has been refreshing and inspiring.

I love all of you, thank you for all you have done to make Steem a new home for me and my words.

Thank you for the read & your support

How did I miss this beautiful collection of your first month for two days?! I am truly humbled by your kind and generous words. And I am gratified beyond measure that you feel the Isle and so many of the people there have been integral to your journey so far. We are blessed by your presence and I'm happy you have found support and friendship there.

you might have missed it for a couple days, Jess, but you certainly didn't miss leaving a positive impact on me that will go on to positively impact and define my experiences on this platform for the future, so at least there's that. ^_^

You're my hero, and thank you so very much for all that you do!!

If I had to narrow it down to the one person I'm most thankful for encountering on this lovely platform, it would most assuredly be you Alain, without a doubt.

From your incredibly incisive supportive comments, to your complete willingness to stop and take time to help tear apart a poem with me to improve and turn it into something greater, to your empathy and passion you radiate outwards to all those you encounter.

I find myself excited when I think of what the future holds for you, and I'm even more enthused thinking of that budding friendship between us! black heart

As a good friend of mine would say; you're good people.

Not only all that, but you have a fantastic music taste and I'm always eager to check out your recommendations. Good music can mean a lot at times.

Bless you for all the good you bring into our lives, and more importantly; bless you for being you, Alain.

Dude Joey! You're my hero, mate. These words are the kindest, they even hurt my cheeks; maybe scale down that kindness, my friend, the world might realize we're not the brooding poets we brand ourselves as. and you know I've got music aplenty any time you want a rec, just give me a shout.

You're good people, too, my friend; excited for the days to come before the night consumes the sun.

You have mentioned some of my favorite people on the platform, and I am so honored to be among such company ❤ you deserve all of it- such a great writer and all around good human. I appreciate you and all that you do at the Isle!

with all that you do, time and effort to give back to the community here, in your hometown and in your classroom, @suntavelme, you are honestly one of the most inspiring people here and I am so happy I had the good fortune of bumping into your blog early in my Steem experience.

These words are so overwhelmingly kind on their own, but coming from someone I respect so much, it means much and more, Sun. All the best to you in all that you endeavor to do!

Awww, thanks for the shout-out, and wow, do you ever know how to capture personalities in just a few words! You poets - as a prose writer, I'm ever in need of your talent. To say so much in the fewest possible words, and usually, your building blocks are the simplest of words.
As for this - maybe I will get into this curating thing some day...
You TOTALLY get it.
You're better at than I am!
Back to curating I must go, humbled, but inspired!

d'aww, Carol, you're the best! and from one writer to another, I'm envious of your ability to assemble so many building blocks into stories - it would overwhelm me so so quickly (Guy has said as much in his critique of some of my longer, unfinished poems, haha).

You're the best, Carol, thank you for everything.

z_black_heart.png

Thank you for being here and for your valuable feedback on my writing! Me too, I am happy to meet the Isle folk and you in particular!

So much the same, Vitaly, I'm learning something new everyday, and that's in big part due to the Isle; that said, some days, what I learn new comes entirely from individuals through their writings, and I'm happy to say that that includes yours, my friend. Excited to continue to read more from you!

Alain, it is a pleasure to have you here. Your poetry is timeless and breathtaking but it is also your comments that gladden my heart. They are uplifting, original and vivid. When I think of some of my good pieces, I think of your comments too.It helps. It keeps people going.
Black Heart Black Heart

speaking of comments gladdening the heart, this is so kind; you're my hero, Charu. I love reading your stuff and am glad that we are in this Lit community here on Steem together, because your originality and humor make it a better place.

Oh man.... so much love here. I'm beyond thrilled to have crossed paths with you, Alain. This, all of this, is only the beginning. Much love to you! And thank you (blushingly) for the mention :-) <3

It is! and I had to mention you, it might not be a beginning without you, and I also truly appreciate another writer whose writings trend dark so that I don't feel so out of place. ;-p

All the best, Inna, and thank you so much!

Dear @carmalain7,
You have wrapped your arms around the spirit of the Isle of Write and the potential here on Steemit to embrace those who add authentic value such as yourself.
Good gawd, if this is just one month in your Steemit experience, what will one year bring to fruition? I look forward to continuing to find inspiration in your posts, your camaraderie and your feedback.

BTW, this complete image of your avatar photo reveals to me that there is not an arm holding up the right hand; it's just the edge of the building, so the person no longer seems to by holding a hand over their own eyes, which creates a very different vibe than I had originally interpreted, LOL.

d'aww, you are the absolute most kind. I think it was your post on my First Aid Kit article conveying your appreciation for the head's up on the new record that made me realize 'yes, I can deliver value here', so I really can't thank you enough.

Yeah, it's one of many of my favorite murals here in RVA - many of which have lots of messaging and meaning laced into their designs. I identify with this one quite a bit - though, as you said, definitely a different vibe.

z_black_heart.png

This was such a lovely post! You focused a lot about the community and everyone's individual contribution to your steemit experience. I did not know that you are simply one day older than me (on steemit)! You definitely had a wonderful start.

Thank you for mentioning my boundless enthusiasm. It made me happy to know that others recognise that. Hopefully, that enthusiasm leads to further growth so one day I can blow people's minds with every poem I write, just like you do ;)

Dude, you too, my friend! So glad that we're on this journey at the same time together.

As if you haven't blown some minds already, but yes I'm looking forward to the day the entire species experiences a mind blow delivered in the form of some Jeremy words!

All the best, my friend!

As if you haven't blown some minds already

Honoured that you think so! It's wonderful to have people like you going through this experience with <3 Let's keep on... steemrolling... ahaha... lets himself out

Well you have certainly had a busy start to your journey on here, quite some notable people mentioned - thanks for including me as well you are too kind. Based on what I have seen so far you are going to do very well on here, and I am looking forward to following your exciting journey in the future.

@c0ff33a you are a scholar and a saint, good sir, in any order you like. I feel fortunate that, somehow, someway, we ran into each other and, despite thinking vlogs would be the last thing I'd seek out, I'm learning much and more from yours. Also, my love of coffee compels me - thank you, my friend.
