Weekly Overview of Translation Category - Week 50, 2018
As a Community Manager for Utopian, I will continue to write these weekly reports for the translation category. The report will include:
- Translators' Activities
- Moderators' Activities
In this report, I will follow the format of the other Utopian categories to provide the following information:
- Graphs of the translators' contributions
- Graphs of language teams contributions
- Charts of comparisons of the different weeks
- Graphs of moderators' scoring
- Average score of the category & comparisons
- Showcase the staff pick of the week if there is one
- Update the Translators Members List
- Upcoming Events
Summary Overview for Week 50: Dec 6 - Dec 13, 2018
A. Contributions Summary
1. Translators' Contributions
This week, we have 50 Contributions.
In the translation category, it is important that we monitor the contributions submitted by the different language teams as translators work together in teams.
Therefore, the statistics and graphs will not show the contributions of the individual translators but will display the 17 language teams instead.
The following chart shows the distribution of contributions of the 17 different language teams.
Analysis:
- Spanish team leads this week with 9 contributions.
- Followed by Filipino, Serbian
- Then Greek, Chinese, Polish
- There are no contributions from Arabic, Slovenian, Hebrew and German teams.
2. Post Contributions - 4 Weeks Comparisons
The following table shows the number of contributions in the different language teams for 4 weeks.
Week 47: 61 contributions
Week 48: 56 contributions
Week 49: 46 contributions
Week 50: 50 contributions
Analysis:
- There are 4 color bars for each language teams with each bar representing the 4 different weeks.
- The following teams show signs of getting more engaged: Spanish, Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese, Serbian, Portuguese
- The following teams show signs of getting less engaged: Arabic, German, Yoruba, Italian, Slovenian
3. Total Number of Contributions for 4 Weeks
It is important that we measure the language team activities not just by one week but to see their monthly overall performance.
The following graph shows the total number of contributions of the 17 language teams in the past 4 weeks
- Week 47: Nov 15 - 22, 2018
- Week 48: Nov 22 - 29, 2018
- Week 49: Nov 29 - Dec 6, 2018
- Week 50: Dec 6 - 13, 2018
Analysis
From the chart, we are able to see the situation of each language team in the spread of 4 weeks:
- Spanish team is most active in a consistent manner
- Followed by Polish and Serbian
- And then Filipino, Greek, Dutch, and Yoruba
- There is no growth in Arabic, Slovenian, German.
From here, we will need to find out what is happening to translators who are not active and reasons for inactivity.
B. Language Moderators' Scoring - Week 50
For the scoring distribution, we have 27 moderators, so I need to group the scoring into language teams so that you can see the analysis clearer in the distribution of scoring.
1. Chart showing the distribution of scores
The X-axis is not able to list out all the languages for each score and only able to list out the language for every other 4 scores shown.
3. Analysis
- The highest score this week is 90 by 4 different teams: Chinese, Greek, Italian Serbian
- Followed by 89 (Dutch, Serbian) & 88 (Serbian)
- About 1/4 of the contributions receive scores between 80 to 90
- About 1/2 of the contributions receive scores between 70 to 80
- About 1/4 of the contributions went below 70.
- The lowest score this week is 40.
The scores of the new questionnaire is able to reflect the quality of the translation in a better spectrum.
The average score of the Contributions is 75.
In the old questionnaire, the average score was around 69.
This new questionnaire shows that our translators are doing good work.
Since these translators have all been screened to do translation work, it is expected that they should score high to reflect the high standard.
C. Staff Pick This Week
Guess What? We have 2 staff picks this week.
They are from the Chinese & Greek teams.
1. Translation Post by @aafeng:
Simplified Chinese translation of Node.js #12 - 1090 words
Node.js® is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine.
@aafeng did a perfect 100% accurate translation. The sentences are fluent in all the strings. The translator even highlighted some of the source strings that are difficult to translate. He showed us how he tried to understand the underlying programming concepts by running a demo code to get accurate translation.
2. Translation Post by @trumpman
The Curious Expedition Greek Translation - Part 50 (~ 1088 words)
The Curious Expedition is a rogue-like expedition simulation set in the 19th century. It's the first game by indie developer Maschinen-Mensch. The game is available on Steam, GOG, Humble Store and at the official homepage http://curious-expedition.com. The game has been regularly updated through out the last 2 years.
According to the moderator, @trumpman did a "flawless translation!". Everything is perfect and 100% accurate. The post is filled with humour and great engagement.
D. Translation Teams - 106 Members List
This week, we added new translators to our teams.
2 new LM were activated in the German team. Let's welcome @egotheist, @infinitelearning
2 new translators were added to the German team. Let's welcome @louis88, @future24
Let's give a shout out to the German team for being active again!
F. Upcoming Events - Restructuring Teams
Although we have 106 members on the list, not all the translators are active. In the coming weeks, we will do some restructuring of the teams.
Presently, all our LMs are active. We also see the need of having 2 LMs in every team in order to keep the teams working at their optimal level. Slowly we will add another LM to teams that have only 1 LM.
Please comment and give your feedback as we work together to make the Translation Category great.
That's it for this week,
Rosa

This is so full of useful information about the Utopian Translation category. As always, this overview is comprehensive. I appreciate the effort in putting all information together.
I perceive the category received more contributions this week if compare to the last report and that looks good. The Spanish team deserves some accolades for their consistency and hard work.
Thank you and have a great week!
Please note that while the CM hasn't changed the footer, I am not scoring #iamutopian posts based on the questionnaire. They have their own metric, and that will be the case until we go live with the new guidelines and new questionnaire, which will be comprehensive enough to reflect these types of posts.
Your contribution has been evaluated according to Utopian policies and guidelines, as well as a predefined set of questions pertaining to the category.
