steemit index of permanent posts : homesteading [v1 - 29 Jun ‘17]

in #homesteading7 years ago

One of the biggest problems I have with steemit is dealing with the 'ephemeracy' of the system.

It is too much like Twitter - posts go racing by in your home page feed without a care in the world.

If you don't happen to catch them in the moment or if they are not resteemed they are gone and the chance for you to make their acquaintance is seemingly lost forever.

This is a great shame - and weakness of steemit perhaps - as there is some excellent content being produced that really isn't getting the attention (and just reward) it deserves.

So in the absence of any bookmarking type feature in steemit I have been recording in a spreadsheet all the posts I spot with good solid content that I might want to refer to again.

I wondered if others here would be interested in the lists I am compiling?

Here is a sample of part of the first list I have for homesteading topics.

If anyone thinks this is useful as a reference source I will post the whole list periodically as I update it.

I even have a zippy acronym for the lists - SIPP, steemit index of permanent posts 😊

If there are any homesteading reference material type posts you have come across that you think would be good for the list do let me know in the comments.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this it's a great idea. I agree that the posting is so fleeting and then they get buried and I forget about what I wanted to look at and I can't find it anymore. And then there's the issue that many people just don't have a chance to see it the first time because they weren't at their computers for that time.

Yes this is for me one of the biggest weaknesses of the steemit setup. Creators are encouraged and enticed to spend time creating meaningful, well researched content but then that content is 'thrown away' so quickly.
And then after 7 days it almost turns to dust!

I fear for this system with the way it works and the ever growing numbers that it might become just like a Buzzfeed or Facebook. It will be all about the clickbait titles and eye candy thumbnails just to catch the eye and catch the upvote.

I agree. I bookmarked the below page and use it to stay up to date on homesteading topics.

https://steemit.com/created/homesteading

Thanks for this.

Yes I think we need some functionality almost like a blog site where you can begin to create categories favorites Etc

especially since I get the impression most of the buzz and interest on here is directed at cryptocurrencies and more generalized interests. Homesteaders, Preppers, Permaculture people and all kinds of eco sustainable people could come to Steemit and do just that. It just feels like the number of people on here is limited and many people who could be adding content on here instead of fb, instagram etc but aren't. I've reached out to the permies.com forum people, Curtis Stone, Ben Falk and Peter McCoy (of Radical Mycology) I think if some movers and shakers joined, they could bring their tribes and then things get fun and interesting! I somehow don't get the feeling that this will fade away like Google Wave though, I think once more people understand how it works, it'll be great.

Getting Curtis Stone on here would be really good.

I know right!? He says he will look into it but he is currently up to his neck in growing season in Kelowna, may be the perfect thing for winter though when he has time. I even wrote this: https://steemit.com/food/@ecoknowme/do-you-know-the-urban-farmer-how-curtis-stone-makes-usderiouusd-profit-farming-in-the-city to try to lure him over. We shall see.

Here's hoping.

One good thing is that Steemit posts are indexed by google. I have found a lot of great helpful content on steemit with google. But of course, you are right that posts are going by so fast. This concern is coming up in a lot of sectors on Steemit and I would imagine this would be a coming up in a future hardfork.

True, though it is kindof weird that you can't easily do that within Steemit. I try on here and get flustered, but then I try on Google and get amazed at how much is hidden out there. That could be another great service for data mining and renewing the good out there.

I think this issue is a must to be addressed in a hardfork asap.

This, and the inability to natively see mentions, just like the Replies or Comments section.

Agreed on that one too. I have no idea on the workings of steemit in terms of how new additions are proposed and then added to the system. But I will be interested to see how things develop over the coming months.

Well look at that!! Thank you for adding in my post! I am so glad because in particular, that is a resource that many really don't know is there! <3

Hooray! now I can check out all your other material! This place feels like a poorly lit series of alleyways sometimes. With stuff whizzing past all the time, occasionally, you make eye contact with some real gems and it feels like your lantern just turned up a bit. Nice to meet you all! @ecoknowme

Hi @ecoknowme, nice to meet you. Glad I could help turn the spotlights on a few more really good content creators here.
And thank you for the resteem. The more times the list is resteemed the more it will help the creators on the list get more exposure.

You're welcome. I have more of your posts on my full list.

I like the idea, but worry that this post, like the ones it is indexing, will also become dust. And, there is no way to modify posts if i understand correctly, so the post is immediately obsolete. Maybe an 'off steem' index (eg google doc, or ?)

Hi @mattlovell. You can actually edit the posts, but I will periodically repost as the list extends. I keep it in a spreadsheet so easy enough to maintain.

I think its a great idea. your posts can include a 'best new' section as well as an index of older posts :) I look forward to seeing them.

Hi @mattlovell. I have also started a 'Pick of the Week' post that will highlight the newer posts.

Here are last week's picks :

I will put out this weeks picks tonight or tomorrow.

you can edit posts but yeah, I don't think you can bring them back to the top of the feed that way, just make corrections. I suppose you just have to write new posts all the time, but I think if a community is forming, we will all end up compiling and sharing the best material produced. Plus the whole interface might evolve to address these issues over time.

Yes hopefully steemit will develop to a point where this sort of 'meta-curation' isn't necessary. But at present it doesn't work very well as any sort of reference source.

I guess it is a bit like when fb came out. Many of the features we take for granted now are part of many versions and revisions that were worked out overtime. I remember the agony of just trying to load a picture with bad internet onto frustrating sites. At least most of the interface is fairly easy to use, but it can and will become more user friendly as it evolves, here's hoping!

It says in the article that he is recording them in a spreadsheet so he can refer to them again

Yes indeed. You can never go wrong with a good spreadsheet 😊

Sweet! I'll upvote on this one, always nice to see your lists @pennsif !

While not native to Steemit, there is a solution for bookmarking posts... @busy.org . I wrote up a post about it showing some benefits. It's not an end-all-be-all, and I find myself using Steemit.com more, but it's something that may help fill a gap?
https://steemit.com/steemit/@greenacrehome/have-you-heard-busy-org

Thanks for the lead on this @greenacrehome, this does look interesting.

Wow! Thanks for adding some of my posts here! I feel special!

You're welcome.

I am new here and that is one thing that's hard for me. I am on a small homestead amf post videos about solar power for the most part. I do not know how to share the links. If you can and me I would be thank full. I did up vote and resteam. Thanks

Thank you for the resteem @solarparadise. The more this list is resteemed and reshown in the feed the more the creators will benefit.
If you have posts to share put them in the comments here and I'll see if I can get them in one of the lists.

I absolutely love this spreadsheet, or list and have copied and pasted it. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. I miss so much good stuff coming out of the Homesteading tag. Thank you

Agreed! I'm also new on here and I still struggle to find the good folk and posts on here. Articles like this help SO MUCH! Thanks @pennsif ! Would love to see more posts like this so that all the like minded folk on here can find each other. Really appreciated! Resteemed and following! cheers @ecoknowme

You are welcome.

Glad you like the list @gardengirlcanada. You are putting out some great posts so hopefully this list will help get them seen by more people. If you can give the list a little resteem that will help all the creators. 😊

Yes of course, anything to help our community. RESTEEMED

Many thanks @gardengirlcanada. That's very kind of you.

I would add this post from @homesteaddad to the Finance section. It's a good conversation topic on diversifying income on a homestead.

https://steemit.com/homestead/@homesteaddad/do-you-diversify

Thanks @greenacrehome - I will take a look at that one.

A lot of info does fly by doesnt it. Sometimes i spend hours recording a video for a post and puff its gone

Yes it is one of the biggest problems of steemit at the moment.
