Chapter XI: The final chapter

We had to get up and leave very early in the morning to go to Brindisi airport. Our plan was to get the bus at 9.30 in Cisternino but it was a long road to get there without transport.. we were putting our faith in hitchhiking!

"We will make it in time, at least one car has to stop! No?"

We were dead wrong! Nobody!
It was on a Monday morning, no person behind the wheel seemed happy.. long faces in every car.. maybe this was the problem..
Eventually it took like 2,5 hours hiking.
What a healthy day that turned out to be, that's for sure!

Almost there...

The last 1/2 hour my brother started to walk really hard, hoping to make the bus in time but I couldn't follow anymore..
The pace was too fast and the load too heavy, but I still gave it the best I could, still not thinking about giving up.
Suddenly he calls me..

"I made it bro, I already bought the tickets. We still have 15 minutes! Where are you?"
Really excited I replied..
"Wow, that's amazing! Did you run? Well done! I am coming asap! I think another 10 minutes before I arrive. Where is the bus stop exactly?"
I remember thinking while he was explaining..
"Hmm.. I think I now but I ain't so sure.. No worry, I will find it!"

I start to look around but didn't exactly knew where to look.. I had the idea before, that I started to know the streets a little bit, after visiting Cisternino a few times.
But this was complete BS! I didn't knew at all!
So I started to ask people and follow their directions.

"Strange.. I see the bus stop but don't see my brother..."
I stopped and called him. Both trying to explain where we were but failing miserably, suddenly he says..
"Aargh.. damn too late the bus just arrived.. I will stay, we will take the next one. I am coming to look for you now."

So we ended up waiting 1 hour and 45 minutes longer for the next bus but meanwhile enjoying some wonderful freshly baked focaccia bread from the local baker. Mmmmm... food can always cheer me up in these stressful moments.. it was like a gift from heaven..haha..

So after all this walking and stressing we finally arrived in Brindisi airport to pick up our friend from Belgium. We had decided to rent a car together so we could explore the south of Puglia and sleep outside for the most part.

Plans change all the time

My first plan was to go to a project in September, but plans change a lot when your travelling! Suddenly I had two visitors from my home country, and by coincidence got a message from the host of the workaway project that had I planned to visit, saying something came up.. he asked me if it was okay for me to come 12 days later. You can clearly see this was no problem at all!😄

This was just perfect, suddenly I am just travelling around in Puglia with a car and two people I really love! I wouldn't wanted it to be any other way. Now I could explore Puglia even more than I had originally planned. My first real experience travelling around and sleeping outside/car.

I remember the first night outside luck wasn't really on our side.. first there was a lot of wind. But we found a good spot next to a tower at the coast line. We sat down against the wall at the opposite side of the blowing wind.

Woohoo! We have beaten the wind problem!

A little rocky though, but who complains when you have wine..
We were enjoying the rest of the evening with a bottle of wine and a lot of laughter..
Suddenly when everybodies eyelids start to close, slowly crossing to dreamland.. BOOM! The weather started to shift quickly and we had to run to the car from the heavy rainfall.

The first night was a bit rough without a lot of sleep (3 people trying to sleep in a small Fiat Panda) but we could still laugh about it. I think we eventually ended up in an airbnb apartment the 2th or 3th night.. recovering some sleep, taking a shower and eating some good old pasta of course! We were still newbies in this homeless traveling game..haha..

I struggled a bit to get my account verified on the airbnb app, but once it was set up it was a really helpful tool!
The times we used it, we just send a message to a host in the morning, and most of the time within an hour got a reply and confirmation! A really helpful tool for nomad travelers in need of a good night sleep and a shower. At very democratic prices most of the time.

We had some good times!

Visited some really nice cities, towns and villages. Travelling like this is a lot cheaper than booking a regular holiday vacation (hotel, B&B, apartements for rent,...) plus the experience has a lot more value in my opinion.

After she and my brother left I moved on to the project in Salento I had planned to visit.

It was a little permaculture project run by brother and sister. They lived together on a nice piece of land, growing a lot of fruits and veggies (including 80 olive trees). This is what I actually came for, to help with the olive harvest.

They olives still weren't ripe enough when I arrived, so it ended up being a very relaxed 3 weeks with them. We did some small jobs in the garden but most of the heavy work was already done during summer. We did some nice relaxing jobs like working on a clay pizza oven, mulching, cleaning harvested wheat and sowing some, eating some... Some times we took the RV and drove to the sea...

If I look back on it now, these passed 3 months in Puglia were like one ultra long relaxed summer vacation. When we come out of school and start to work, we start to crave for long summer vacations again after awhile (at least for me), so this was like a dream became reality!

My first ever real experience living as a free man!

I plan on keeping this feeling of being free until the end of my life.. just because this feels like the right path for me. For every problem there is a solution, and there are infinite possibilities and ways to live life on this planet. From indigenous people to city slickers to the high rollers on top of society's chain, life has it all..
I will always choose for the possibilities in favor of freedom and nature. Once you get the real taste of freedom you're in for life!
I just try to follow the laws of nature and feel my way through life.

In the end everything always works out, just not in the way you planned it in your mind!!
I just try to make the best out of "the changes" life brings on to my path.
