Florence Nightingale, OM, RRC, DStJ (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was an English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing.

She came to prominence while serving as a manager of nurses trained by her during the Crimean War, where she organised the tending to wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a highly favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.

So here is a great quote from Florence:

"I attribute my success to this:
I never gave or took any excuse."

Excuses are a dime a dozen.

They are everywhere and anyone is willing to give them to you.

Making them only takes one thing...

Your success!

Every time you make an excuse you are weakening your own power.

You are weakening your ability to shape your own life.

Every time you choose to give no excuse you are gaining power.

You are giving yourself more strength, more ability to shape your own life.

At work if you are asked did you get such and such done, and you haven't, what do you say?

Is it, "No, this and that happened and then this person blah blah blah."?

Most of us do this most of the time.

The secret is to stop doing it.

Just stop!

Now!

You are hurting yourself and cannot even fathom how badly!

"But I was just telling you the reasons, not excuses."

Bull...

Sh!t!

Those reasons, true or not, are excuses.

There is absolutely nothing in this world that will, nor that ever will, separate them from one another.

Saying "reason" only makes it sound lighter, it's really an excuse.

"But this and that did happen and that person did blah blah blah."

So what?!

So What! Listen!.jpg

Of course they did, but it was your responsibility to get such and such done, wasn't it?

What's worse is when we tell ourselves these excuses.

That really eats away at our manifestation capability there!

So how can we handle situations like this and still retain our power and abilities?

Easy, just say "No."

Don't add all the fluff.

Say, "No I didn't, but I'm planning to work on it tonight (or tomorrow or whenever, just be concise)."

You will be amazed at the difference this simple thing will make!

It's actually astonishing to see!

You will immediately feel better about the situation.

You will retain your power of the situation.

Your boss , or whoever, may still be upset but they will carry that with more respect because you didn't fluff them with BS that they could see straight through!

So pay attention, when you start telling the "reasons" why you didn't do such and such just remember what Florence Nightingale had to say...

"I attribute my success to this:
I never gave or took any excuse."

Great post. Well thought out and executed.

Thanks a lot man!

This is great man, I wish more people followed this advice. I hate hearing excuses, this is one piece of advice I already follow. I think it really shows character to accept responsibility for everything you do.

It really does!

They call it the 5 second miracle (taking full responsibility for your life).

It really gives you power.

Thanks for the great comment!

If you really want something you will do what you must to go after it. I know this first hand. If you don't want something that is ok too just acknowledge it and put it at the back burner and revisit at some point.

Totally true Miriam! If you want it you gotta go get it!

Dont acceot ut. Accept that you will fail and move on. Fail forward. Dont make excuses why you should quit. People who make excuses hardly make anything else, especially a difference!

Well said queeny! Love your take on it!
