The daily pick of hidden gems(behind the scenes)
So there has been huge debate and arguments over my daily gems and well I felt it is time to share with you in detail exactly what I do and how I go about doing it.

Behind the scenes
No one ever knows what is really happening behind the scenes. So here is my directors cut of what actually happens.
So here it is ... I wake up 6am every morning, more or less, I put on the computer and then go shower(did I mention that this would be in great detail). I get back sit down and so it begins... the fight through the steemit>new section.
The loading circle begins(South African internet is slow)... and still continues to load.
Finally spam starts to appear...
After a few minutes of drowning in the posts I get a breath of fresh air. I immediately start to scroll down... and down... I will have the hulk scrolling finger soon. 1 hour... 2 hours ... finally 3 hours has been reached. So the search begins, don't get me wrong I still look at some of the span, I don't just scroll up and look for catchy headings or pictures. That would be fair as I want to give everyone and equal opportunity so I open every single post spam or not. Some posts burn my eyes as many of the people on the steemitabuse-classics know.
Once I have gotten back to the top of the steemit>new section

I begin checking out the promotion channels in(see if I have missed anything and find a few posts that are great). Once I have reached the top of the new section that refresh button starts to crumble beneath my mighty left click. Post at this time is found under 15 minutes and it has been the case that I find posts that will get a "home-run". You can be angry with this but hey it just shows I am really getting quality posts for you to read.
So now we get to the number of featured posts(and no 5 is not the limit). Once I have found 5 it doesn't mean that I now sit back relax and have lunch... NO I push forward with guns blazing against the swarm of spam, hacking my way through leaving a trail of upvotes in my wake
It is now 3pm-5pm and with my gun fully loaded with amazing posts, I upload it for all to see and use.
HEHEHE now it is my turn to "spam" in the comments. I sit behind my computer scream with a huge grin as I spam out my "link-this is where I will be featuring your post today". Oh the joy I receive while doing this.

Many reply to my "EVIL SPAM" with great thanks and joy, they are probably sitting there pressing the link, like a little child, with joy and excitement rushing through their bodies.
After a lot of comments thanking me for the work I am doing and telling me which one they like and which was the best. I start to receive that hater vibe in channels and as the hater comments come in. I look at my computer and feel like this...
Oh yes that is right... I feel some anger flowing trough my body... not because YOU are HATING on my post but because YOU didn't bother to go UPVOTE any of the POST which has been FEATURED in my post... Then some of you press the mighty RED FLAG BUTTON and feel so empowered... yet you still haven't upvoted any of the posts, or even read them...
SHOCKING!!! right... I don't think that idea had ever past their mind... now here is another shocker for you. If you were looking for great posts and upvoting them well then I wouldn't have to spend time looking for them for you and then you getting all upset about it... and I'm trying to help you out... LOGIC??? Well that went out the window.
So now for some questions:
Why do you read the daily gems? Are you using it so that you can make "5" out of your 20 upvotes for the day? Do you use it because you love reading great articles? Do you just go into every post which is featured and just upvote as you know they need your upvote? Are you even spending time to go upvote the posts? Are you trying to improve your posts quality to get into my daily gems? Is is a way in which you are getting inspiration and improving your life?

How I feel right now
I am going to be honest with you... I am seriously irritated but I can't be angry with you guys as you are allowed your opinion and freedom of speech.
I have to commend on you diligent work in your posts against me. They are really well written, great format and you have also take them time to provide some illustrations to back up your post. You make great posts and you spend much time in making these posts. Therefore I am not angry, beats the spam posts I go through everyday, so I am actually thankful that you put time and effort into your writing.
PS thank you to all those who have shown their support. Also, thank you all for writing and commenting whether it be you hating on me or thanking me.
For all those "haters" out there. I love you guys as you put effort and time into making your "hater" posts and some of them are really good(not going to lie). By far beats the spam out there.
This post didn't come close to taking as much time in making as my daily gems do. There an interesting thought for. I would rather write a post that will help others out than write my own post that doesn't help out. SHOCKER!!! again isn't that funny and ironic!
Good points. But not everyone is a hater for bringing up some honest valid points about how these "highlight" feature posts work. I appreciate them, and maybe it could be done differently if you take into consideration a more equitable management of the payout, as some suggest. Good job on your for doing it though.
Many of us do the same, without a "Featured highlights" real of our own. I do it, and I bring up this important issue in my recent article on improving the quality on Steemit and the people who create content. I am emphatically trying to get more people to read that and understand the importance of quality content, rather than focusing on making money by posting fodder low quality content that clouds up the "new" stream. Please read and share, and ONLY upvote if you appreciate what I am trying to do for Steemit.

I created a github for a PM feature, as this needs to happen to facilitate sharing of information, without it counting as "spam" on the chatrooms, and would be much quicker, since you only would have to login to steemit, and not actually go to the secondary chat interface: https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/issues/183
That way upvoting quality content can be done based on personal networking, rather than restricted chatrooms, and the featured posts would be less of an issue as well. This chat feature can completely turn around the Steemit low quality issue. I really hope they implement it.

Thank you for the indepth explanation of what appears to be a very intense and in depth curation task with a crappy internet connection, you should get a prize just for having to struggle with a bad connection..LOL I just recently stumbled upon these hidden gem posts and personally I think they are great, so keep em coming, its like the readers digest of steemit :)

With success always comes trouble.
Jealousy, questions... sometimes hate.
This is part of the game, and most people would choose to ignore the inquisitors. I am happy to read this post as an answer to them. An honest answer where the author openly expresses his feeling. Not everybody would do this.
That said...
Bottom line is: the hidden gems are useful to steemit, and the fact that that the author makes money out of it is a positive side effect. Period.
It helps diversity of content.
Imho, so called "haters" should spend their energy promoting other authors, and create more whales like @dragonslayer109.
And if they want to discuss about the system and how it is unfair: just have a look to the trending list and watch some whales accounts milking it and using the system to generate massive revenues with somehow average quality posts.
At least, initiatives from Dragonslayer help others.
In the end, if you still disagree with me, don't forget that the responsibles are NOT the authors, they are the voters.

In regards to your "featured author" posts, which have included me, @strangerarray, here is my side of the story.
I think that the job you do (we do) is a very important one in an evolving society. It is up to the people to choose wheter they vote up or not the articles mentioned.
The main idea behind this is to vote the authors in the digest...
I will be as frank as mcjiggery. I love the hidden gems. To me they are exactly that. It gives me a chance to spot posts I may have missed. It's sometimes hard enough catching good posts from your feed of people you follow when you have a certain number of them let alone the "New" category which i also look at.
So I say to you, keep up the good work!!
