The captain opened the hatch of the entrance lock, and we descended to the ground.

There we were waiting for a group of gloomy, frightened people. After welcoming them, the captain asked the men, clearly distinguished from the rest its very cool that they have happened, and what needs help.

He replied that the conversation will be long and preferably held in a closed room and not in open areas.

Todd, the name of the man, turned out to be the mayor of the village of colonists, located nearby, behind one of the nearby fishing lines. He refused the kind invitation of our captain to continue the conversation on Board the ship, explaining that in order to more fully imagine the picture of what is happening, they should go to the village and see everything on the spot.

Our commander quickly formed a mobile group of ten people, which included our three-I, Arthur and bill. The rest remained on the ship and had to be ready in the event that without delay to leave the planet.

Having given the corresponding orders to the Deputy, our captain at the head of group moved to the settlement of colonists.

Go was not far, and soon we stood on a small Tiananmen in the center of the settlements and with interest viewed small, predominantly wooden might. Only one of the buildings stood out among them. It was larger and half built of stone.

It was a local government office where the current problems of the villagers were discussed under the leadership of Todd. Currently, it was the seat of the headquarters for the protection of the colonists from the attacks of the unknown and insidious enemy.

The furnishings inside were Spartan: nothing superfluous, only a long table with chairs, a safe on the stand in the corner of the room and a cooler with drinking water.

When we sat down, Todd laid out a map on the table and began to acquaint us with the situation.

  • Here we settle down - he circled a pencil round the settlement, - There, in the North, behind the next wood there is one of the tribes living on this planet. These are friendly creatures that lag far behind us in terms of development, but quickly learn new skills.

  • From the East side of our settlement we broke fields, sowed them with seeds, both brought with them, and borrowed from savages.

  • No, you don't think anything like that, - he hastened to add, noticing how tensed we are, we they do not forcibly taken away, only exchanged for Souvenirs some seeds, and then just repeatedly harvested and re-seeded fields. When the grain was enough not only to produce another crop, but also left excess, we used it for cooking.

  • Around the field, we have built corrals. Unfortunately, the animals we brought with us on the ship have not taken root here. But we did not despair and caught the animals of several species that lived on this planet, and now they are bred.

  • In the South we border the river, where we built a pier, built several boats and fish.

  • For some time the danger for us was to present Sands, located to the West of the village. Previously, they did not pose any danger to us. Strong winds practically do not happen here. Yes, and we are well protected from sand drifts forests.

  • Until recently, we believed that the desert, stretching to half the planet, lifeless. But more recently, the sand dunes suddenly become "alive", they began to crumble the sand, and of them there was a huge spider creature.

  • A few days, they have not been touched. Then came raids on the pens with the animals they killed some of the strongest poison, causing convulsions and ending in death accidents of animals within a few minutes.

  • The witness of one of such attacks was our biologist who in combination looked after cattle. He managed to signal for help before he died from the bite of a nasty arthropod.

  • Natives to tremble afraid of these creatures and say that they appear from the Sands every two or three years. Cope with them indigenous people do not even try, so strong and cunning these animals. On the contrary, they try to appease these creatures, to bring them a blood sacrifice, mostly for killing these large animals. However, from time to time they sacrifice one of their fellow tribesmen.

  • The last two nights, all the villagers had stayed up, repulsing the spiders on their home. Unfortunately, the weapons that we brought along, partially out of order, and one that is still in effect, those things almost did not cause any damage.

Todd paused and looked at the others as if silently asking them if he clearly outlined the situation.

  • Could you describe, how are these "spiders" - dare to ask me.

  • I will not only describe their appearance, but even shows made by our artist sketches of these creatures, ' replied Todd and laid it on the table sheets with drawings.

  • Yeah, the sight of these creatures blew my mind. On the one hand, they seemed harmless handsome, on the other... - there was something fascinating in their eyes.

Looking at them, I do not believe that they were capable of murder.

However, they were ruthless predators that did not stop at nothing.

  • A few hundred meters from the border separating us from the desert, is the lair of the uterus these "spiders". She is on the hunt comes out, just watching other canines and manages them.

  • I don't know how she does it, but it seems the communication between them takes place on the telepathic level.

  • We can't describe it in detail, because we saw it only through binoculars.

  • Will you help us? - with a plea in voice addressed our captain Todd. The other members of the community of settlers, too, looked hopefully at us.

  • We are here for this and came - said the commander of the ship. - I just need to get back on Board and send an armed response unit to your rescue.

  • How long till the sun goes down?

  • About four o'clock.

  • Then we have to hurry to get back before dark.

With these words the captain got up, and our group went back to the ship...

To be continued...
