Helm Software Synth - Filter

Filter

Filter is an EQ or equalizer module. It is very simple to use and give us many many cool results.

Every sound we hear is made up of a range of frequencies. These frequencies can be very low like 808 drum sounds or very high like a cymbol or a bird song. An equalizer lets us manipulate these frequencies to enhance some and deduce others. Filter is Helm's equalizer.

The graph in the middle of Filter provides us with a visual means of understanding what Filter is doing to our sound. The line graph shows where sounds are brought up in volume or reduced.

Helm provides us with some EQ shapes to use at the top of the graph to manipulate. It also gives us sliders along the top, right and bottom of the graph. We can manipulate the graph line to alter the sound profile. This is a trial an error adventure so have some fun playing.

Helm also provides some controls on the right: Drive, Envelope Depth and Key Track.

Drive adjusts the gain level of your sound as it enters the filter. Both Envelope Depth and and Key Track subtly change the behaviour of the Filter. We review these in the video tutorial, but playing to hears its effect is a good idea. For more technical details on these two controls you can also refer to the manual - http://tytel.org/static/docs/helm_manual.pdf

As with all the modules in Helm, the Filter is meant to be used in coordination with other modules to create unique sounds. Explore what this and all the other modules have to offer you.

I hope you have enjoyed this video tutorial on Helm. There will be more tutorials to follow.
Cheers,
