YourMateTravels#17 - Theft and Muay Thai

DEUTSCH UNTERHALB

Good idea: leaving phone & wallet at home.
Bad idea: getting credit card at 3 am.
Shortly after that I disappeared for about 8 hours and had the craziest and most frightening night of my life.
So I didn’t have my phone or anything and Flo didn’t know what was up. After 6 hours he grabs my passport and starts looking for me all over Bangkok. He takes TukTuks to different hospitals to check if I was brought in by an ambulance. Nothing. Instead they sign him up for hospital with my passport. Communication gap I’d say.
He then proceeds to different police stations to check if I got jailed. He finally ends up at a police station where they say “Aaah, german man! Yes, yes! Yesterday jail!”. Relieved and terrified at the same time talks to the policeman: apparently it’s not me. As you can imagine they weren’t too concerned or helpful: “We send you an e-mail if we arrest your friend.” Perfect.
After more than two hours he comes back to the hostel to find haggard me sitting on the rooftop. Kinda sounds like “Hangover 2”? Pretty close.
I won’t go into detail in this blogpost for this is more of a matter for a trauma therapist, haha. Not even Flo knows the story.
Surprise surprise: my credit card and some cash were stolen. Not too bad because it was a debit mastercard with only a few hundreds on it.
Actually I’m really happy I still have both my kidneys; F the money. Freakin’ Bangkok, freakin’ Khaosan Road.
Don’t be afraid of Bangkok now because I gotta say: all that was my own fault!

Gute Idee: Handy & Geldtasche daheim lassen.
Schlechte Idee: Kreditkarte um 3 in der Früh holen.
Kurz danach verschwand ich für ungefähr 8 Stunden und hatte die verrückteste und angsteinflößendste Nacht meines Lebens.
Ich habe also quasi nichts bei mir und Flo weiß nicht, was los ist. Nach 6 Stunden schnappt er meinen Reisepass und sucht mich in verschiedensten Teilen Bangkok’s.
Er nimmt TukTuks zu verschiedenen Krankenhäusern, um zu erfragen, ob ich eingeliefert wurde. Nichts. Anstatt dessen nehmen sie ihn als Patienten unter meinem Namen auf. Englisch ist nicht die Stärke der Thais.
Weiter geht’s zu Polizeistationen, um zu erfragen, ob ich eingesperrt wurde. Endlich weiß man in einer Polizeistation etwas: “Aaaah, Deutscher Mann! Ja, ja! Den haben wir gestern eingesperrt!”. Erleichtert und gleichzeitig entsetzt spricht er mit dem Polizisten: es geht doch nicht um mich. Wie man sich vorstellen kann, waren sie nicht sehr besorgt oder hilfreich: “Wir senden Ihnen ein E-Mail, falls wir ihren Freund verhaften.” Perfekt.
Nach mehr als 2 Stunden kommt er zurück ins Hostel, um mich verstört auf der Dachterasse zu finden. Klingt nach “Hangover 2”? Ziemlich nah dran.
Die Details würde ich eher einem Traumatherapeuten erzählen, als sie hier im Blog niederzuschreiben, haha. Nicht mal Flo weiß was passiert ist.
Überraschung: meine Kreditkarte und etwas Bargeld wurden gestohlen. Nicht allzu schlimm, weil es eine debit Mastercard mit nur ein paar hundert drauf war.
Ich bin ehrlich froh, dass ich noch beide Nieren habe; pfeif auf das Geld. Verdammtes Bangkok, verdammte Khaosan Road.
Kein Grund jetzt Angst vor Bangkok zu haben: das war vollkommen meine eigene Schuld!

Muay Thai Fight In Rajadamnern Stadium

After not really leaving the hostel for 2 days I was ready for some action again.
A Muay Thai fight it shall be! Flo books some tickets online for the Rajadamnern Stadium for 2000 THB (=51 €).
We get there at 06:30 pm today and sit down in 2nd row. Everything looks surprisingly well organised, traditional music fills the stadium and the first fighters step into the ring.
Enough talk. Let’s see some hits!

Nachdem ich das Hostel 2 Tage quasi nicht verlassen habe, war ich heute wieder bereit für Action.
Ein Muay Thai Kampf soll es werden! Flo bucht online Tickets für das Rajadamnern Stadium für 2000 THB (=51 €).
Um 18:30 treffen wird dort heute an und setzen uns in die zweite Reihe. Alles sieht erstaunlich gut organisiert aus, traditionelle Musik erfüllt das Stadium und die ersten Kämpfer steigen in den Ring.
Genug geredet. Sehen wir uns ein paar Schläge an!

They behave very respectful towards each other and kneel before the crowd. Overall we get the impression of a very honorable fighting culture.

Die Kämpfer verhalten sich sehr respektvoll gegenüber einander und gehen sogar vor dem Publikum auf die Knie. Insgesamt bekommen wir einen schönen Eindruck einer sehr ehrenvollen Kampfkultur.

It’s way worse than it looks. We figure how gnarly it really is as an American steps into the ring against a Thai. He’s out in 01:20 minutes. The differences between him and the Thais is scary. Note to myself: never ever engage in a fight with locals.

Es ist viel ärger, als es aussieht. Wie krass es wirklich ist, sehen wir, als ein Amerikaner in den Ring steigt. Der Thai macht ihn in 01:20 Minuten alle. Die Unterschiede in Sachen Bewegung und Schmerzresistenz sind erschreckend. Notiz an mich selbst: niiiiieeemals mit Einheimischen anlegen.

12 years old killing machines.

The evening ends with 2 kids (<13 years old) severely beating the living sh_t out of each other. Phew. Trust me: if you have no fighting experience, they just K.O. you in 20 seconds.

Der Abend endet damit, dass sich 2 Kinder (U13) gegenseitig richtig wild verprügeln. Puh. Glaub mir: wenn du keine Kampferfahrung hast, machen dich die Kids in 20 Sekunden fertig.

Now that I got rid of a good bunch of bad karma we’re ready for some good times travelling onward. Next stop: Ko Sichang - a quiet island.

Jetzt da habe ich mal eine gute Portion schlechtes Karma abgetragen habe, sind wir bereit für einige feine Erlebnisse auf der Weiterreise. Nächste Halt: Ko Sichang - eine ruhige Insel.
