Checking my finances on top of Marina Bay Sands.

The Singapore feeling starts with the arrival at this extraordinary airport:
All carpeted floor, the terminals are connected via unmanned automatic trains, everything’s quiet and clean. There’s even a tiny garden with a pond and areas to relax in that terminal I arrived. A friend told me about a butterfly house in the airport which I haven’t been to tho.

Das Singapur-Gefühl beginnt mit der Ankunft in diesem außergewöhnlichen Flughafen:
Durchwegs Teppichboden, die Terminals sind mit unbemannten automatischen Zügen verbunden, alles ist ruhig und sauber. Sogar einen kleinen Garten mit Teich und genug Platz zum Relaxen gibt es. Ein Freund hat mir überdies von einem Schmetterlingshaus erzählt, das ich aber selbst nicht gesehen habe.

Public Transport

Logging into the airport WiFi I check out where my Hostel is. I choose to take the subway.
Again: unmanned and fully automated. The prices are really low - I pay like 2 Singapore Dollars (=1,2 €) to my Hostel which is more than half an hour away in Chinatown.
Later I figure it’s even cheaper to buy a rechargeable public transport card than single trips.

Mittels Flughafen-WLAN schau ich wo mein Hostel ist und entscheide mich für die U-Bahn.
Wieder: Unbemannt und voll automatisiert. Die Preise sind echt niedrig: Ich zahle um die 2 Singapore Dollars (=1,2 €) für die mehr als halbstündige Fahrt zum Hostel in Chinatown.
Später finde ich heraus, dass man mit der wiederaufladbaren Öffi-Karte noch günstiger fährt.

As I wait for the subway I realize I’m closer to a stroke than I thought:

Während ich auf die U-Bahn warte, stelle ich fest, dass ich näher an einem Schlaganfall bin, als gedacht:

In the train again I notice how clean everything is. I look around and find a reason for the cleanliness.

Im Zug fällt mir abermals auf, wie sauber alles ist. Ich sehe mich um und finde einen Grund dafür.

Singapore is a nation of many nations. They even got 4 national languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Apparently you gotta apply some rules and execute them strictly if you want many different cultures to properly live amongst each other.

Singapore ist eine Nation vieler Nationen. Es gibt sogar 4 Landessprachen: Englisch, Hochchinesisch, Malaiisch und Tamil. Offensichtlich muss man einige Regeln aufstellen und sich strikt um die Einhaltung bemühen, damit viele Kulturen ordentlich miteinander leben können.

On the phone on the crosswalk: 300 S$
Chewing gum on the street: 300 S$
Spraying graffiti: flogging
Drugs: death penalty

And they’re pretty serious about that.

Nachdem ich mit ein paar Gästen und Einheimischen geredet habe, stelle ich schnell fest, dass man sich besser ans Gesetz hält:
1 S$ (Singapur Dollar) = 0,62 €
Am Handy während man zu Fuß die Straße quert: 300 S$
Kaugummi kauen: 300 S$ (du findest keine Kaugummiflecken auf der Straße
Zigarette oder überhaupt Müll auf den Boden werfen: 2000 S$
Graffiti sprühen: Prügelstrafe/Stockschläge
Drogen: Todesstrafe

Und das meinen sie ziemlich ernst.

Cost of Living

A few hours into the Singapore trip I figure that my brain changes it’s ways. I get way more rational and the Balinese warmth in my heart is pushed aside. Things become more rational and fact-based. Wonderful how your mind and body adjust to different circumstances.
Since that’s my vibe here, let’s just roll this way.

Nach ein paar Stunden Singapur fällt mir auf, wie sich meine Denkweise verändert. Ich werde viel rationaler und die Balinesische Wärme in meinem Herzen wird zur Seite geschoben. Alles wird rationaler. Ehrlich gesagt ist es wundervoll, wie sehr sich Körper und Geist auf andere Umstände einstellen. Nachdem das jetzt mein Modus ist, fällt der Bericht entsprechend aus.

People told me Singapore was super expensive. Well, it actually depends on where you stay.
Booking into a Hostel in Chinatown it looked like that:

I paid about 16 € per night (480 € per month) and was provided the following:
-unlimited drinking water
-unlimited coffee / tea
-unlimited fruit juice
-air conditioning
-unlimited Wi-Fi
-unlimited electricity
-room is cleaned 2 times a day
-fresh towels every 2nd day
-fresh linen every 3rd day

Laundry = 2€, incl. dryer 3,15€

Cheap mall & china food market nearby:
-food 2-5 €
-massage 13€

-SIM-Card 100 GB for 1 week (LTE) = 10 €

other mall nearby:
1$ shop.
-1 axe/lynx shower gel = 0,63€
-2 Snickers = 0,63 €
…

So you can actually stay cheap in Singapore as well. If it wasn’t for what you can read further down there I would’ve actually stayed cheaper than in Bali.
Overall I'd consider Singapore as a good place to be as a digital nomad. Internet is fast and reliable, it gets you in a productive mood, there's plenty stuff to see and you can still have a reasonable life for low prices.

food market Chinatown; 3,50 S$ = 2,14 € per meal

Man hat mir gesagt, Singapur wäre äußerst teuer. Naja, das kommt jedenfalls darauf an, wo man sich befindet.
Durch meine Buchung in einem Hostel in Chinatown sah es folgendermaßen aus:

Ich zahle 16 € die Nacht (480€/Monat) und habe folgendes Leistungen:
-Wasser so viel du willst
-Kaffee / Tee so viel du willst
-Fruchtsaft so viel du willst
-Klimaanlage
-unbegrenzt Internet
-unbegrenzt Strom
-2 Mal am Tag putzen sie das Zimmer
-alle 2 Tage frisches Handtuch
-alle 3 Tage frisches Bettzeug

Wäsche waschen = 2€, inkl trockner 3,15€

günstige Mall & Chinesischer Essensmarkt in der Nähe:
-Essen 2-5 €
-Massage 13€

Mall gegenüber:
1$ shop.
-1 axe Duschgel normal groß = 0,63 €
-2 Snickers = 0,63 €
...
SIM-Karte mit 100 GB für 1 Woche (LTE) = 10 €

Man kann Singapur also auch günstig bereisen. Wenn ich mir nicht gegönnt hätte, was man weiter unten liest, dann wäre es sogar günstiger gewesen, als mein Bali-Aufenthalt.
Insgesamt ist für Singapur eine Stadt, die ich im im Digitalen Nomadentum ansteueren würde. Internet ist schnell und zuverlässig, man wird in eine produktive Stimmung gehoben, es gibt eine Menge zu sehen und man kann billig recht vernünftig leben.

The Cryptos

Finally got that Lambo.

As pretty much everyone noticed there was a big price increase in Bitcoin and quite every other cryptocurrency in november and december. I figured I already held positions longer than 1 year which is when you no longer pay tax for the gains in austria.
So I cashed out my initial investment at some good point and left my gains in the market. Since I heard some jealous voices I may tell you one thing in advance: The money I spent were actually savings of mine. No gains.
For those who ask how I managed to save money for my travels: I’ll update you on that in another post.

Still I gotta admit, capitalism hit me hard in Singapore, haha.

So gut wie jeder hat mitbekommen, dass der Preis von Bitcoin und quasi jeder anderen Kryptowährung im November und Dezember nach oben ging. In Österreich ist man nach 1 Jahr zwischen Anschaffung und Veräußerung steuerfrei - ich habe gesehen, dass das bei meinen Positionen der Fall ist und habe mein initiales Investment auszahlen lassen.
Nachdem sich ein paar Neider zu Wort gemeldet haben, möchte ich folgendes vorweg schicken: Das auf der Reise ausgegebene Geld war mein erspartes. Keine Gewinne.
Wer sich fragt, wie ich Geld für die Reise sparen konnte: Ich werde einen Blogpost dazu verfassen.

Nichtsdestotrotz muss ich gestehen, dass mich der Kapitalismus in Singapur hart erwischt hat, haha.

Now For The Fun Stuff

Now I’ll try to get 1 week into a few lines and pictures.

Jetzt versuch ich mal 1 Woche in ein paar Zeilen und Bilder zu bringen.

The Singapore Merlion; Singapore's Landmark.

The first night I spent in that hostel in Chinatown I mentioned. After that it was just the locker for my stuff. I spent every night in another hotel.

Through some divine dispensation I got to stay on night at the Sheraton Riverview at Clark Quay for free and had a great view:

Die erste Nach habe ich in besagtem Hostel zugebracht, wonach es nur mehr der Aufbewahrungsort für mein Gepäck war. Danach habe ich jede Nacht in einem anderen Hotel zugebracht.

Durch eine göttliche Fügung konnte ich gratis im Sheraton Riverview beim Clark Quay übernachten und hatte eine tolle Aussicht:

From the Clark Quay you can see that big hotel consisting of three towers and a boat shaped pool on top of it. I was like “That looks cool. What’s that and what’s the price?”

Vom Clark Quay aus sieht man so ein großes Hotel, das aus 3 Türmen und einem bootförmigen Pool oben drauf. Da dachte ich so “Das sieht cool aus. Was ist das und was kostet das?”

Marina Bay Sands Hotel

Had to treat myself with some oysters. Oh, that's the Hotel in the backgroud!

I learned it’s called “Marina Bay Sands” and checked it out on booking.com. It was like 350 € for the premier room (47 square meters) - we got the 39th floor with the view over “Gardens By The Bay”. So, I was in company and we shared the costs.
That must be really sobering for all the peeps who saw my instagram/facebook and thought I was a crypto-millionaire! :D
Now I spare you the words, just check it out:

Ich finde heraus, dass es “Marina Bay Sands” heißt und schau die Preise auf booking.com an. Es kostete zirka 350 € für das Premier Zimmer (47 qm) - wir waren im 39. Stock mit Blick über “Gardens By The Bay”. Ich war also in Begleitung und wir haben uns die Kosten geteilt.
Das muss jetzt richtig ernüchternd für all jene sein, die mein Instagram/Facebook gesehen haben und dachten, ich wäre Krypto-Millionär! :D

The last 2 are from Gardens By The Bay by night.

To be honest it wasn’t too overwhelmingly good - it felt like a theme park at some point. Actually the sauna was a joke. Overall price-wise it was ok, but I’d rather stay in the “Park Royal” or “Oasia” in Singapore. But you know, you get spoiled so quick when spending money.

Ehrlich gesagt war es nicht allzu überragend - hat sich teilweise wie ein Freizeitpark angefühlt. Preis-Leistung war insgesamt OK, würde zukünftig das “Park Royal” oder das “Oasia” in Singapur vorziehen. Dazu muss ich allerdings sagen, dass man sehr schnell verwöhnt/unzufrieden wird, wenn man sich erst mal n paar Sachen leistet.

A Few More Impressions

I can’t name it but something is weird about that scene.

Talking about weird stuff: I passed by an traditional chinese pharmacy.

What is up with that? Whitening?! They really love being pale.

Gotta break out of the weird stuff now…

...ok, I had one more. Back to regular life.

Yeah, now I actually tried sightseeing and checked out a temple.</center

Which looked pretty nice on the inside.

But then I lost it. I can’t do this sightseeing thing.

I rather like passing by stuff randomly. Just like these houses.

...and I also like to fool around.

...and bum out other tourists on that penny board I bought in Kuta, Bali.

Somewhere in Chinatown I met an analog nomad selling stuff on the street.

Yeah, after some time you gotta get out of the city and see some greens at the botanic garden.

Talking about greens: I even tried that stinky Durian fruit. Not too bad.

Besides whatever was visible and apparent, still it’s the intrinsic happenings which are even more interesting for me. Coming from Bali to Singapore made me reflect differently over societies and my own behaviour.
People here seem to be more cold hearted and western. They live in a structured world full of rules. Some locals even are fearful and wouldn’t even leave Singapore because everywhere else in the world is dangerous. A bit like at home.
In Bali people had less money, but more heart. One time I asked a surf guide “Bro, that’s pretty dangerous. Can we really do that?”; he grinned and replied “Bro, everything’s dangerous.”
Is it the rules and structures that make us those in-human beings?

Holy guacamole! I got so many pictures and so much stuff to tell it’d just blow up the entire Steemit blockchain and your attention spans.
I’ll just stop here, mentally have my last dinner and head over to rome:

Neben all dem sichtbaren und offensichtlichen sind es vor allem die intrinsischen Geschehnisse, die noch interessanter für mich sind. Von Bali nach Singapur kommend reflektierte ich plötzlich wieder anders über Gesellschaften und mich selbst.
Die Leute hier scheinen eher kaltherzig und westlich zu sein. Sie leben in einer strukturierten Welt voller Regeln. Einige Einheimische sind ängstlich und möchten Singapur nichtmal verlassen, weil alle anderen Orte auf der Welt gefährlich sind. Erinnert mich ein wenig an zu Hause.
Auf Bali haben die Leute weniger Geld, dafür mehr Herz. Einmal fragte ich einen Surfguide: “Bruder, das ist ziemlich gefährlich. Sollen wir das wirklich machen?” und er grinst mich an: “Bruder, alles ist gefährlich.”
Sind es die Regeln und Strukturen, die uns zu diesen un-menschlichen Wesen machen?

Heiliger Strohsack! Ich hab so viele Bilder und so viel Zeug zu erzählen, dass es die gesamte Steemit Blockchain und eure Aufmerksamkeitsspanne sprengen.
