GADGET#16: Samsung EVO960 SSD (1TB)

in #gadget8 years ago

Samsung started selling the new EVO and PRO960 Series

A while ago I needed a replacement SSD so I went with a Samsung 940 SSD. My old SSD was still in 2.5inch format so I chose to buy the more expensive mSATA drive which was tiny. I thought well sending 850 USD on this drive is worth it as I can use this drive in the next Laptop I will buy.

Well a year passed and when I wanted to buy a new pc the new Intel processors were still not available in the laptops I wanted to buy. So I said just wait another half year. Well then the new PCs I wanted started to go on sale but OMG they introduced a new standard called M.2 which is even smaller than mSATA. I was doomed....

I bought a new laptop with only 250gb (M.2, NVMe, PCI-E) and 8gb ram and first updated the Ram to 32GB. The new 1TB SSD from Samsung I had on pre-order for 3month and finally in January I received it.

Website

It is NVMe SSD with 4 Channel PCI-E for very fast speeds

1TB with the best performance!

Checkout what Samsung says about it:

The 960 EVO offers the next level of  performance in storage for smart consumers who want an experience beyond  what the SATA interface can provide. An enhanced bandwidth, provided by  the NVMe interface, combined with the new Polaris controller,  facilitates sequential R/W speeds up to 3,200/1,900 MB/s and random R/W  speeds up to 380/360K IOPS, respectively. Plus, the new Intelligent  TurboWrite technology accelerates write speeds even further*.  SOURCE

This is the fastest SSD I ever owned...

It writes with up to 1500mb/sec and reads with speeds up to 2300mb/sec. I transferred my old SSD data (around 180gb of data) within a couple minutes. It was incredible to see how fast this beast is... Now I am downloading my pictures of my Qnap Cloud (that's 200gb of pictures and videos). Once the sync is complete I wil be able to post even more interesting travel stuff.

BTW. I bought this SSD with my STEEMIT earnings. Because of the BTC price going up the drive did cost me effectively only 350 Euros (normal retail price 450 Euros)

Do you think spending 450 Euros was a good choice?

Really cool gadget :))

haha well its a boys dreawm ssd ;)

wow thanks

Fast disks are always a great investment. You can't buy more time.

PS: you called me a geek a few minutes ago... geek

yeah , I never said I am not a geek ;)
about the markdown thing. because you can make great webpages if you learn html , nobody will ever learn html... people just want things which work and are easy to use. (see apple..)

I was looking at the 960pro version which is even faster but decided to stick with the 960evo as the pci-e with 4 channels is fast enough. at least enough for a blogger who does not do any hard graphic works on his laptop ;)

ja schon krass schnell. wobei die eingebaute platte auch 600mb / sec hatte. aber kein vergleich die neue platte ist pervers

Wow, that's one cool gadget for sure!!

the hard part was to figure out how to install this baby ;)
the NVME M.2 disk with 4 channel are called key M and there is no external case for this kind of disk. I had to backup all data on another HDD and than swop the m.2 disk. i was able to send the backedup data with speeds up to 400m/sec to my new disk. so that is pretty amazing fast. (even the drive is 4x faster than that usb 3.0 is limited to 630mb/sec)

I would have simply taken it to a store to get that done lol ;)

well. i dont trust my personal machine in the hands of anybody else than me ;)
in the end it was easy . create a windows bootable disk with rufus and the microsoft media tool and than boot the pc from that.
