Attractions of Sapa #17 Cat Cat Village

About 3 kilometres outside Sapa town you’ll find the village of Cat Cat. Tourists visit the village to see the distinctive old customs which have been lost in many of the other villages. It sits in a beautiful valley and was formed in the 19th century when members of various ethnic groups moved down from the mountains and gathered together.

This is a tranquil place where women will sit happily in front of their homes chatting to each other for hours on end. They often work at their looms weaving the wonderful brocade garments for which they are famous. Another local craft is jewellery making, and delightful items are fashioned from silver and gold.

The houses are of traditional wooden build, with an altar, kitchen, larder and sleeping area. This is only a 20 minute walk from the centre of Sapa and makes for a pleasant trek.
