Attractions of Sapa #10 Quang Truong Square

In the centre of Sapa Town you will find Quang Truong Square. This is a focal point for the locals, particularly in the evenings, where many will gather to meet friends, chat and generally just hang out. Many of the young boys here will entertain themselves by playing informal football games or even better to see, Da Cau a game where a shuttle cock is kicked between players. The skill and artistry of these guys is quite remarkable.

The Square is often the venue for official planned events. The full moon festival here is excellent. There’s a parade of floats and the famous ethnic hill tribe people come into town, to set up stalls around the square, from which to sell their wares. Local musicians play traditional music and entertain the tourists and themselves. This is one of the poorest areas of Vietnam and events like these provide valuable economy for the locals. It is rather humbling to see just how much pleasure they get from the simple things in life.

At the weekend the Quang Truong Square gets busy with ethnic minorities, holiday makers, locals and backpackers pouring in to sit and chill out. If people watching or photography is your thing then this is a great venue. The square is dominated by the Holy Rosary Church at one end and the towering mountains around it, which makes for a splendid backdrop.

Quang Truong Square is surprisingly large for a small town like Sapa, it is a great meeting and focal point and one which you will not miss if visiting this northern hill town.
