Attractions of Sapa #3 Bac Ha Market
Taking in Bac Ha Market is a truly worthwhile experience, but only if done in the right way. This is quite simply the biggest and best market in the north of Vietnam. It is a three hour drive from Sapa and many tour operators offer single day trips to visit. It simply isn’t worth it. Three hours there and three hours back to spend about two hours at the market, when all the best that it has to offer has finished. A much better way to make the trip is to take in Can Cau Market at the same time. Can Cau is a Saturday market and Bac Ha Market operates on a Sunday. One or even better two overnight stops in Bac Ha town will enable you to see these fascinating places in all their glory.
Bac Ha Market attracts up to ten groups of Vietnam’s incredible ethnic minority hill tribe people, these include: Flower Hmong, Phu La, Black Dao, Tay and Nung. They all wear their own traditional costumes and give photographers a wonderful experience. But do try to use your cameras in a thoughtful way. Asking permission is always better than intrusively sticking a lens in someone’s face.
Bac Ha Market is at its best in the very early daylight hours of Sunday morning. The local minority people arrive bring their livestock, handicrafts and rice wine to sell. It is possible to buy handicrafts here, but you will get better value and quality in Sapa town. This is not really a market for shopping, but more of a tremendous look into history. These people have been doing this for centuries and little has changed. It is a bustling riot of chaotic noise and colour. It really s wonderful.
