Attractions of Sapa #9 The Holy Rosary Church
The Holy Rosary Church in Sapa is also known as simply the Stone Church. You will sometimes see it billed incorrectly as Notre Dame. It was considered a masterpiece when it was built by the French colonists in 1925. It stands at one end of the large Quang Truong Square in the middle of the hill town that has developed into the centre of trekking and climbing in Vietnam. The design is in the shape of a cross and based upon the Roman basilica. it is a small church measuring just 25 feet wide and 130 feet long. The bell tower is impressive though at 65 feet. The church bell was added in 1932 and echoes through the valleys and around the surrounding hills.
The tiled church was built entirely of stone, using a mixture of limestone, sand and molasses as the mortar between the joints. Like so many other buildings in Vietnam it was damaged in the war and ended up being used as a rice store. It was finally restored to its full glory in 1995. It is now run by a priest from Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital.
The church holds services for the locals and cultural events that are attended by the local ethnic hill tribe people. It is a real stand out attraction in Sapa. it has a unique look and great charm about it.

You said notre dame...
In Bangladesh, we have a college named notre dame, it is run by christian missionaries. It's very popular.
The Notre Dame Basilica here in Saigon is truly beautiful. Thanks.
