Attractions of Sapa #15 The Love Waterfall

The Love Waterfall is an delightful attraction in Sapa in northwestern Vietnam. Visitors to Sapa come for the trekking and generally arrive on the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai. This is a truly wonderful part of Vietnam, home of incredible scenery, terraced hillsides and some of the 54 ethnic minorities that still survive in modern day Vietnam.

Beautiful and serene, The Love Waterfall
The waterfall is very picturesque and draws many visitors. As is often the case in Vietnam, there is a legend behind the name. Story has it that long time ago, beautiful heaven sent fairies chose the Waterfall as a place to bathe. One of the fairies heard the flute playing of a local boy and stayed to listen to him every night. When her parents found out they forbade her to visit the falls again. She missed his music and stood forlorn overlooking the falls from a distance in the hope of hearing him again. Overcome by sadness she transformed herself into a bird and flew down the mountain so she could stay with her love forever.

Even today girls from the local H’Mong ethnic minority come to the pools here to bathe. They are shy by nature and wear long black dresses to protect their modesty. The walk to the waterfall is very pleasant. A red dirt road runs through lush countryside and bamboo forests adorned with red, yellow and white rhododendron flowers. The water takes a more dramatic tourney. Running down from Mount Fansipan, the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia, it forms the Golden Stream before it finally reaches the point almost 350ft above the pools, where it cascades down noisily.

The Love Waterfall is a lovely place to spend a couple of hours. Waterfalls do have a magical quality about them and this is no exception. It makes a valuable addition to any Sapa holiday itinerary.
