Attractions of Sapa #12 The Rice Terraces of Sapa
In the North West of Vietnam as the land rises up to meet the Southern Himalayas spilling into Thailand, the scenery takes on epic proportions. The nearby Mount Fansipan the highest mountain in Southeast Asia watched over a landscape that has been carved by nature and mankind for centuries. The Rice Terraces of Sapa cling to the sides of the lower mountains in an unbelievable geological formation. This area is reached by overnight train from Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi.
Farming has changed little here in hundreds of years. The terraces were cut out of the mountains long before the farmers now reaping the benefits were even born. This is a tough unforgiving landscape and these people have a tough unforgiving occupation. Rice farming is back breaking unpleasant work in the lowlands. In the Vietnamese highlands where farmers have to climb mountains and stand calf deep in much colder water to work, it is pretty grim.
The terraces belie the tough conditions, painting an unbelievably beautiful canvas over the hills around Sapa town. They chance colour with the seasons. Early on there are brown and quite drab, then as they are flooded to prepare for planting they shimmer and glisten in the morning sun, giving a silvery colour to whole valleys. Finally as the planted rice starts to mature they turn the richest of green colours. This is the the rice terraces of Sapa at their finest. It is astonishingly beautiful.
Trekking has taken off in a huge way here and the rice terraces of Sapa are a huge draw, pulling hikers, trekkers and mountaineers from all over the world. Walking through these hills and valleys is an unforgettable experience.

When I travelled sapa. Rice had not been mature yet. I missed one of beauties of Sapa. 😔😔
Yes it changes colour throughout the year. Silver when full of water, brown when empty and lush green when ready for harvest
