Attractions of Sapa #1 Mount Fansipan
Sapa is the former frontier town in the North West of Vietnam. Over the years it has developed into a major centre for hikers and trekkers. To get there it’s best to take the overnight train from Hanoi, which arrives at the border town of Lao Cai early every morning. Travellers are then ferried into Sapa by minibus along quite treacherous roads. In addition a direct bus service from Halong Bay was added a few years ago.
Mount Fansipan is found is one of the most unique areas of Vietnam. This is quite frankly stunning scenery. Rice terraces have been carved into the hills to produce the most amazing landscape. The scenery changes dramatical as the rice harvest reaches maturity. Throughout the growing period colours go from Brown, to simmering silver as the terraces are flooded and on to green.
There is much to see and do here and I’ll be looking at the attractions over the next couple of weeks. Today we start with the highest mountain in all of Indochina, Mount Fansipan. At 10,312 ft it dwarves most other mountains here and is one of the main attractions. It is actually part of the southern most tip of the Himalayas. Known as the “Roof of Indochina” it is fast becoming a victim of its own success. Sadly when these attractions happen to be geographical located in the poorest regions of the world, the appetite to milk their beauty is too strong to resist.
The cable car ride to the top opened a couple of years ago and is capable of transporting 2,000 per hour to the top. The entire number of people who paid visits to the summit in 2013, was, yes you guessed it, 2,000. It is the longest triple cable car ride in the world. To say that it has been contentious would be an understatement, but it has certainly proved popular with Vietnamese people.
Mount Fansipan is the very start of the Himalayas
Mount Fansipan remains special, this is the highest southerly point of the immense Himalayas as they travel South. It is always a balancing act between creating tourism and leaving nature alone. It is though a must-see tourist attraction. Yes, the cable car is an intrusion, but this is one of the poorest regions in the entire country. The mountain still remain one of the great sights in Vietnam. It remains high on any what to see list, particularly in the Sapa region. The revenue created will undoubtedly change the lives of thousands of people.
At the summit there is a pyramid shape monument. Hugging the monument has become almost a rite of passage for Vietnamese youth. People travel to Vietnam from oversees for many reasons, sightseeing, chilling out or partying. Sapa is one of the country’s greatest assets and Fansipan is certainly a highlight.

Oh man. Beautiful. I love Sapa and Fansipan but haven't been in nearly 6 years. I'd love to see that trolly. Sapa was part of our 16 day adventure thru Vietnam and probably our favorite area of the country. Thanks for the revisit!
