Criaturas de Agua

El cielo nocturno se veía medianamente iluminado por la pequeña y lejana compañera de la estrella principal, se trataba de un sistema binario en el que una pequeña enana blanca iluminada por su descomunal calor residual, orbitaba una estrella blanca de gran tamaño y en medio de ambas un pequeño sistema formado por tres planetas, oscilaban alrededor de la estrella mayor en un precario equilibrio, en el que uno de ellos se encontraba justo en la zona de habitabilidad.

Si bien el agua superficial era escasa; apenas un cinco por ciento de la superficie estaba cubierto por un pequeño océano de gran salinidad, a su alrededor se concentraba un ecosistema con abundantes y variadas formas de vida.

Sin embargo, no era en las proximidades del océano donde estaba el principal interés de los biólogos de la división de ingeniería ambiental, a varios cientos de kilómetros de las tierras irrigadas por el agua oceánica, en pleno desierto, habitaban los que fueron llamados gusanos cristalinos, criaturas similares a grandes y flexibles tubos de cristal, que albergaban en su interior cientos de litros de agua suspendida en una especie de gel de hidrocarburos.

Los curiosos gusanos, eran capaces de absorber gigantescas cantidades de agua, accediendo a la que encontraban en la capa freática, enterrando ambos extremos de su traslucido cuerpo en la arena y extendiendo largos apéndices que salían de ellos, hasta alcanzar las aguas subterráneas.

Sus cuerpos traslucidos y arqueados, podían verse formando grupos, dispersos en diferentes partes del desierto, como si de estructuras artificiales se tratará, con sus esqueletos en forma de cinta espiral, visibles a través de su piel, como alguna suerte de resorte embutido en un tubo de cristal.

El principal interés en estas criaturas, recaía en la posibilidad de aprovechar sus características genéticas y recrearlas en formas de vida sintética que sirvieran para la extracción de agua subterránea, en planetas con escases de ésta en su superficie, sin tener que recurrir a perforaciones que alteraran en terreno, lo que tiempo después sería considerado una idea disparatada, que nunca se llevó a cabo.

Water Creatures

The night sky was moderately illuminated by the small and distant companion of the main star, it was a binary system in which a small white dwarf illuminated by its enormous residual heat, orbiting a large white star and in the middle of both a small system formed by three planets, oscillated around the main star in a precarious equilibrium, in which one of them was just in the zone of habitability.

Although the surface water was scarce; only five percent of the surface was covered by a small ocean of great salinity, around it was concentrated an ecosystem with abundant and varied forms of life.

However, it was not in the vicinity of the ocean where the main interest of the biologists of the environmental engineering division was, several hundred kilometers from the lands irrigated by ocean water, in the middle of the desert, inhabited what were called crystalline worms, creatures similar to large and flexible glass tubes, which housed inside hundreds of liters of water suspended in a kind of hydrocarbon gel.

The curious worms were capable of absorbing gigantic quantities of water, accessing the one they found in the water table, burying both ends of their translucent body in the sand and extending long appendages that came out of them, until reaching the underground waters.

Their translucent and arched bodies could be seen forming groups, scattered in different parts of the desert, as if they were artificial structures, with their skeletons in the form of a spiral ribbon, visible through their skin, like some sort of spring embedded in a glass tube.

The main interest in these creatures lay in the possibility of taking advantage of their genetic characteristics and recreating them in forms of synthetic life that could be used to extract groundwater on planets with scarce groundwater on their surface, without having to resort to perforations that altered the terrain, which would later be considered a nonsensical idea, which was never carried out.
