El Reactor (1/2)

El torbellino de materia acelerada a velocidades relativistas, caía en el horizonte de sucesos. Las tremendas temperaturas que le confería la aceleración, hacia brillar el disco de acreción con un intenso resplandor ámbar. En medio de aquella vorágine, un objeto no más grande que un planeta, una esfera imperfecta achatada por su vertiginoso giro, carente de cualquier reflejo o luz, como un vacío en medio del anillo de fuego que la rodea, como si la nada misma habitase aquel remolino infernal, era el horizonte de sucesos, tras él se ocultaba la singularidad.

La impresionante vista del agujero negro, tenia la cualidad de dejar aturdido a quien lo contemplara por primera vez, sin embargo, para Richard, esta experiencia de asombro e incredulidad parecía repetirse siempre, sin importar cuantas veces estuviera frente a uno de estos monstruos devoradores de materia. Si bien, la vista de los agujeros negros de Schwarzschild, y por más escasos que fueran, era desconcertante y aterradora, como ver una nada que parecía crecer en medio del espacio, como si el universo mismo hubiese sido extirpado de un punto particular de si mismo; sin embargo, eran los de Kerr los que en realidad lo dejaban sin habla, presenciar el silencioso estruendo del disco de acreción, su apariencia casi de luz sólida, mientras más cerca estaba del horizonte de sucesos y su abrupto final en el negro vacío de éste, eran para él una experiencia abrumadora.

La nave de Richard emergió del puente en las proximidades del agujero negro, su estela se extendió en línea recta por varios cientos de kilómetros como si de un rayo de luz que se detenía en el espacio tras emerger de la singularidad se tratará, en realidad no estaba desacelerando, simplemente era un efecto producido por el desplazamiento de ésta a través del puente, para Richard y los otros tripulantes de la nave su velocidad nunca había cambiado siempre se estuvieron desplazando en línea recta alrededor del puente hasta sumergirse en él y salir al otro lado.

El uso de este puente estaba restringido, sólo trabajadores del proyecto Hades estaban autorizados a cruzarlo, en las proximidades de este agujero negro se desarrollaba lo que podría ser el primer reactor de energía oscura desarrollado por la humanidad, Richard y los otros ocupantes de la nave eran parte del equipo de desarrollo de éste.

-Nuevamente embobado con el dragón, Richard- comentó Boris, quien ocupaba el asiento al lado de Richard en la nave, al verlo observar el agujero negro por la ventanilla.

-Sí, nunca dejo de maravillarme con estas cosas- observo Richard, sin retirar la vista del terrorífico objeto -no deja de sorprenderme poder estar tan cerca de ellos-

La nave se aproximó a una gigantesca estación espacial que orbitaba el agujero negro a una distancia prudencial del disco de acreción. El propósito de elegir esta extraña y extrema ubicación, para desarrollar este proyecto, fue el poder poner en trayectoria al agujero negro la estación con el reactor en su interior, en caso de que algo fuera mal y así evitar posibles daños que afectasen el propio espacio tiempo. De haber una emergencia, la aceleración del disco de acreción desintegraría la estación y su contenido, hasta transformarlo en simples partículas.

Hades, como fue llamada la estación y su peligroso contenido, tenia el aspecto de una rosquilla, pero en el agujero de en medio, una gigantesca esfera contenía el reactor, en ella sólo había un vacío casi absoluto, pero en este vacío, en completo aislamiento del resto del universo, la espuma cuántica hervía, produciendo partículas y antipartículas, que se aniquilaban sin parar, generando pequeñas cantidades de energía, que tenían el efecto adicional de dilatar el espacio que las contenía, esta energía, que era continuamente generada, por pequeña que fuera, se iba acumulando hasta llegar un punto de masa crítica, donde el proceso sería tan acelerado que permitiría aprovecharlo. El peligro de esto, estaba en que existía una probabilidad del 0,5% de que, al alcanzar la masa crítica, el proceso podría salirse de control, y ocasionar el colapso de la esfera y posiblemente generar una singularidad.

The whirlwind of matter accelerated at relativistic velocities fell on the horizon of events. The tremendous temperatures conferred by acceleration, made the accretion disc shine with an intense amber glow. In the middle of that vortex, an object no bigger than a planet, an imperfect sphere flattened by its vertiginous turn, devoid of any reflection or light, like a void in the middle of the ring of fire that surrounds it, as if nothing itself inhabited that infernal whirlpool, was the horizon of events, behind which singularity was hidden.

The impressive view of the black hole had the quality of stunning whoever saw it for the first time, however, for Richard, this experience of astonishment and disbelief seemed to repeat itself always, no matter how many times he was in front of one of these monsters devouring matter. Yet the view of Schwarzschild's black holes, however scarce, was disconcerting and frightening, like seeing a nothing that seemed to grow in the middle of space, as if the universe itself had been extirpated from a particular point of itself; However, it was Kerr's that actually left him speechless, witnessing the silent roar of the accretion disk, its almost solid light appearance, the closer it was to the event horizon and its abrupt end in the empty black of it, was for him an overwhelming experience.

Richard's ship emerged from the bridge in the vicinity of the black hole, its wake extended in a straight line for several hundred kilometers as if a ray of light that stopped in space after emerging from the singularity would be, in reality it was not slowing down, it was simply an effect produced by the displacement of this one across the bridge, for Richard and the other crew members of the ship their speed had never changed they were always moving in a straight line around the bridge until submerging in it and leaving to the other side.

The use of this bridge was restricted, only Hades project workers were allowed to cross it, in the vicinity of this black hole was being developed what could be the first dark energy reactor developed by mankind, Richard and the other occupants of the ship were part of the development team of this.

-Once again enthralled by the dragon, Richard - commented Boris, who occupied the seat next to Richard in the spacecraft, as he watched the black hole through the window.

-Yes, I never cease to marvel at these things- I observe Richard, without taking his eyes off the terrifying object, I never cease to be surprised to be able to be so close to them-

The spacecraft approached a giant space station orbiting the black hole at a prudent distance from the accretion disk. The purpose of choosing this strange and extreme location, to develop this project, was to be able to put in trajectory to the black hole the station with the reactor in its interior, in case something went wrong and thus to avoid possible damages that affected the own space time. If there is an emergency, the acceleration of the accretion disk would disintegrate the station and its contents, transforming it into simple particles.

Hades as the station and its dangerous contents were called, looked like a doughnut, but in the hole in the middle, a gigantic sphere contained the reactor, in it there was only an almost absolute vacuum, but in this vacuum in complete isolation from the rest of the universe, the quantum foam boiled producing particles and antiparticles, that were annihilated without stopping, generating small quantities of energy that had the additional effect of dilating the space that contained them, this energy that was generated continuously, for small that was accumulating until arriving at a point of critical mass, where the process would be so accelerated that it would allow to take advantage of the generated energy. The danger of this was that there was a 0.5% probability that, when reaching the critical mass, the process could get out of control and cause the collapse of the sphere and possibly generate a singularity.
