Today in Sports History #29 - 1st world weightlifting championship (March 28, 1891)
Dear Steemians, after a lot posts about animals living in water it is Time again for another Sports History Post! Today on March 28, 1891 the very first world weightlifting championship was held in London.
The first world championship saw only 7 athletes from 6 countries competing for the trophy. The competitors where champions from Germany, England, Austria, Belgium and Italy (what was the 6th nation only!?). The first World Champion was Edward Lawrence Levy from England.
The three-day event consisted of repetition and alternate pressing with 56 or 84 pounds in each hand. Levy is founder of the Amateur Gymnastics Federation of Great Britain and Ireland and set 14 World Records between 1891 and 1894.Men categories: 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg and +105 kg // Women categories: 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg and +75 kg.
