Today in Sports History #27 - Football - first FA Cup Final (March 16, 1872)
So I am back with more Today in Sports History - finally with a topic I can really talk about - Fußball - Football - in the USA you called it Soccer but in the rest of the world it is Football. The most popular Sports in the World, invented in England, usually dominated by my countrymen from Germany, Italy and Brazil - just saying!
Back to FA Cup, currently the 136th edition / season is played - the FA Cup takes place since 1871 with some years break during the two world wars in the 20th century. The FA cup is an annual knockout competition in England and is now called the EMIRATES FA CUP.
On March 16, back in 1872 the first FA Cup Final took place in England (probably still the real inventors of the Sports) with the Wanderers winning the first FA Cup in history by winning against the Royal Engineers 1-0 in Bolton, England.
Both clubs are still existing but do not play a major role in current football anymore. The Wanderers Football Club is based in London and was founded in 1859. Like the Royal Engineers they were among the dominant teams of the early years of football. In total they won the FA cup five times!
The Royal Engineers is representing the Corps of Royal Engineers in the British Army. Chelsea, ManU or Arsenal are dominating English Football nowadays - in the 1870ies the royal Engineers have been one of the dominating teams and won the FA Cup in 1875. They also are recognised widely as the pioneers of the combination game, in contrary to the kick and rush style England was famous for in the not so long ago past.
In 2012 there was a great remake match of both clubs - this time the Royal Engineers won by 7-1. Below you can see the engineers celebrating their Win!
