A Promise Kept

I watched his face light up, as he smiled at me.

My heart felt as if it would burst, seeing how much I meant to him. My father kissed my head and passed me to Jack, with more difficulty than I knew. Jack knew it, and exchanged an entire conversation with my father telepathically in less than three seconds. The relief among the three of us was noticeable to all. Even the swans could be heard cooing their comforted approval.

“Dear family and friends, we are gathered here today…” I heard begin, but I couldn’t really hear anything anymore. I kept my eyes on Jack, listening to his breath on the air. I read his lips as he said, “I do.” I felt my lips move as they said “I do.” I felt the relief of the burdens of the universe fall off my shoulders as my hands were placed in his, and he leaned forward to lift my veil.

“With this kiss,” he spoke soothingly, “I offer you my undying love, forever together, as Winter and Summer, as one.”

He kissed me softly;

his lips lingered on mine, his fingers brushing my hair back behind my ears. With that, the cheering began again, as people stood clapping and hollering with joy. The quiet only came when Leonie moved from the seating to the aisle; she approached the bridge and turned to face the congregation.

“All shall watch, either seated or standing, as the newly married Winter and Summer, take their first dance as one season,” she announced, and with a clapping of her hands, the fiddlers and bagpipers began to rearrange themselves into the gazebo.

Jack took my hand,

and started to lead me out into the water. When I hesitated at the gazebo’s edge, looking down at the cuttlefish glowing beneath, he whispered, “Do you trust me?” and held out his hand. I did so with all of my being, and so I took his hand, and let him lead me out on to the water. I was surprised to feel the water hard, frozen underneath my feet, and realized that he was causing this. A few feet in every direction around us was frozen wherever we stepped, whilst the rest of the lake remained thawed, lit by the swimming cuttlefish below and the bright stars above that reflected on the water.

I laughed at the impossibility of my life,

and allowed him to pull my waist up against him in preparation for our dance. He was unbearably beautiful. I watched his eyes, his seedling eyes until the very last possible second, falling so deeply into the universe that lied within them, that everyone else disappeared as the music began. I felt him lead me in a dance all over the lake, dipping and twirling me across and around gracefully. Every moment on the lake with him alone, felt like a dream, magical in every sense, and yet real as his fingers against my back. Somehow, even dancing on frozen water, I was comfortably warm. It was as if we really were one season now; my summer heat and his winter snow, existing as one, existing as the most beautiful, natural, breathtaking season ever seen before.

As we reached the gazebo,

the song came to an end, and I smiled, as I heard the cheering of the people I had momentarily forgotten were there. As I stood there, in Jack’s arms, breathless, I heard Leonie announce, “Dancing on the lake is now open to all, we hope you have enjoyed the ceremony, and will enjoy the reception party as much,” and with that Jack led me up on to the gazebo before standing on the water, and slamming one foot down so hard it rippled across the lake freezing all but the outskirts of the water.

“He never ceases to amaze me,” I whispered to Leonie, as she and Kasson followed Jack and I back out on to the lake.

“Nor I Raea, he wanted to surprise you with this. The frozen lake to dance upon was entirely his idea. He said something about a ball the night you met?” she called out as Kasson whisked her off to the music.

As Jack, led me across the lake, I asked him about it.

“The night I met you Rae, I was holding a welcoming gala for Hoss. I hate dances you see; women who have nothing in common with me, dancing with strangers, hoping one of them might choose to claim her for his bride, hoping that I might choose one of them. The dances I have ever been to have all been that way. I realized that dancing, though something I love dearly had become something I looked upon with disgust. When you agreed to marry me, I knew that my insides were dancing with delight. So, I decided then and there that we would dance on our wedding night, and it would be the most beautiful, romantic dance which would highlight on the outside, the relief and magic I feel on the inside. I wanted to dance with you; I wanted to soar with you into the rest of our lives together.”

I felt him passing me across the water

from his left arm to his right arm, effortlessly. He was literally sweeping me off his feet, and I was powerless to his enchantment. He was more romantic and artistic than even I and that really was the most impossible circumstance I had ever known to occur. It was almost as if I now had wings, and just as Leonie and Kasson now used theirs to dance across the lake, he used his to carry my heart across the water.

“…We were now one, and nothing felt more unbreakable. The end of act one.”

How long you been writing this novel frolick ? did you do it just for steemit ?

Actually no. I wrote this novel a few years ago, then I joined Steemit, and I thought since I hadn't published it yet, I would see how well it was received on here and then go from there. :) Followed you!
