The Land of Raiden

It was such a gorgeous land.

Beautiful, enormous, flowing trees, known throughout their realm only as Whispines, covered the entire exterior. The canopy’s seemed to glow a light blue from an aerial view. The leaves that covered the trees blew gently as we glided over. The wind blew every moment, causing the land to sound like whispers echoing in the trees. The forest from above was so dense that it seemed as if it was one giant leafy bed. We flew until we found a slightly barer meadow, where we could land.

I climbed off Starling,

and peeled my eyes in every direction looking for a sign of the way into the city. It usually took me a few minutes to find the entrance, as it seemed as if each time I arrived there, it was in a different location. It could be recognized as an archway where two trees leaned together, and eventually wrapped their limbs together. Large ruby crystals lined each trunk of the doorway, framing the archway with a message to all who entered their domain.

It read: Those who enter the land of Raiden will all answer to the fairest Maiden.

When I finally spotted the entrance,

I let out a fairly loud cheer, “Ah ha!” A very strong enchantment lay over the woods, and only those with pure intentions could cross the gate and make it to the city. If you entered through the gates with anything less than a pure heart you would find yourself lost in the forest forever. As I crossed through the gates with Starling, a path in front of me began to glow a light blue. As long as I stayed on it, I would be led to the city. I had been here many times when I was new and had very fond memories of it.

The whispering of the trees grew sweeter

and louder the longer we walked. Soon emerging before me were numbers of balboa trees so tall I could not see the tops. Bridges and staircases made of vines wrapped intricately like a spider web between trunks, leading to the city in the canopies. A large narrow ramp with tree limbs for rails lied ahead of my current path. As I approached it, I heard the snap of a twig, and suddenly Starling and I were surrounded by stunningly beautiful, pale men with bright green eyes and black hair in various lengths. They were all carrying weapons hidden from sight, though I knew they were there. Having recognized me they had refrained from their typical defense strategies.

“Keeper Astraea, you are looking radiant indeed.”

One stepped up to me and kissed my hand. It was the captain of the guard, whom I had had a crush on since I was a made a season. In their realm, they aged beautifully as many lived to be over thousands of years old before moving on to the final realms. He was two hundred years old and still rather feisty.

“Thank you Kasson.”

I blushed and smiled at him.

Though my feelings for him had faded over time, I still found he made me nervous and very aware of my feminine side as I tucked my hair behind my ear.

“Shall I escort you into the city?”

“What about Starling?”

“Jared, take Starling to Queen Leonie’s stables. Make sure he is well taken care of.”

A young man stepped forward.

“Yes, sir,” he petted Starling gently.

Seeing Starling accept Jared, I kissed his head, and whispered “I’ll see you soon my love, so behave yourself.”

When Starling had been lead away,

I turned back to Kasson. He offered his arm to me. I graciously accepted it, and when he had dismissed the guards who immediately disappeared back to their posts, we made our way up the ramp.

“So what gives us the pleasure of your visit, Keeper Astraea?”

“Please, Kasson, you can drop Keeper.”

“As you wish, Raea,” he laughed.

“And to answer your question, I am on my way to Tertull and thought I would stop in and see everyone. Is it true Leonie is training her replacement on the throne?”

“It is, sadly. She has reached the age limit, and is starting to show it.”

“Who is she training?”

“I don’t know if you have ever met her. Her name is Tea, and she was one of the girls who we found on the outskirts of the trees. She wasn’t old enough to speak at the time, so Leonie named her. Leonie took a special interest in her. She is a sweetheart, and I believe she will do the city justice. No one can really ever replace Leonie, but Tea can at least begin to.”

He stopped in front of a door that would lead us to Leonie’s inner chambers. I realized I had been listening so intently to him, that I hadn’t really noticed any of the city’s aesthetics around me.

“Wait here for a moment Raea.”

I nodded as he whispered to the door, which then opened only enough for him to enter before it closed behind him. I only had to wait for about two minutes before the door opened and Kasson ushered me in.

The room I entered made my jaw drop

open every time I saw it. The ceiling was constructed from twisting and winding tree branches above us. Archways lined the main walkway on both sides that lead to a beautiful ebony throne. Behind each side of the archways were small stone pools, filled with glowing blue water. They were filled with silver water. The same silver water needed to perform my paintings on Earth. I made a mental note to remember to request a refill for my bottle.

The closer I came to the throne

the more I reveled in the glory of my surroundings. On both sides of me in front of the archways were large white feathered nests, which were used for sitting on, and some of which were occupied. They were set up in pairs with a round wooden table set in between each pair. Each table was made of a living stump, covered in moss, fungi, and flowers. Atop each table sat a copper instrument, used by those sitting at each area to smoke various types of tree-lume, a plant used to bring about the warming of the heart and the inspiring of creation. Its sweet smell, like that of freshly picked roses, delicately tickled my nose.

As we reached the throne, both Kasson and I bowed our heads in respect.
