An Unexpected Winter
Wondrous beings seemed to inhabit
the Distant Shores, of all shapes, sizes and colors, all of whom knew Michael. Whether it is a formal “Good day sir!”, or a head nod, or a handshake, no one appeared to pass Michael without great fondness radiating from their entire beings. He was clearly a rather special creature, whom had led many to find where they belong.
The paths that lined the forest floor were made of various minerals, stones, gems and glass. The light reflecting off the paths formed prisms of light. At the end of each path that did not lead into or up a tree, a prism of light stood, as if it was a doorway. He watched as others around him either disappeared into the trees or through the light. He wondered where the path he was on would take him. ‘Why had Michael stated it was an honor to meet him? Did he say that to everyone who crossed his path? After all, he did seem to be a pleasant fellow, with quite a passion for his position.’ He ventured to look past Michael and see what lay at the end of their path, and found it was a prism of blue light. He felt nervous, yet not uncomfortable in a way he couldn’t quite understand or describe.
“Is that light our destination?” he asked Michael.
“No sir. That light is a door that will lead us to our destination.”
Michael’s confident tone
was enough to convince Jack. He watched Michael step into the light and disappear. He took a deep breath, before doing the same. He hadn’t realized he had closed his eyes until he opened them. What a sight to behold. He seemed to be standing inside a large palace made entirely of emeralds, amber, rubies, and sapphires. The walls, the ceiling, the floor, everything had been carved from these precious gems. He was a little intimidated by the sheer glamour of such a dwelling. It made him question who could possibly live there, and if it was a creature of great magnitude, as it appeared to be, why on earth was he there?
The ever resilient Michael however,
did not appear to be phased. He lead Jack to a door that appeared to be quartered into four solid pieces that had been placed together to form one solid door. Each piece was made from a different gem. The top left was a panel made of emerald, the top right was a panel made of amber, and the bottom left and right were panels made of rubies and sapphires. Jack would not have realized it was a door, if Michael had not knocked. There was no door knob, or latch to open it with. ‘Michael must have hands made of rock,’ he thought quietly to himself, rubbing his own knuckles whilst inwardly cringing. He heard a voice say “Come in,” and slowly the door moved inward as if an invisible force was pushing it, before sliding to the right.
Michael led the way across a large hall,
at the end which sat six animals, only five of which had a creature companion sitting next to them, sitting up a few steps from the floor they walked on. As he crossed the hall, he noticed the entire room had sketches, paintings, drawings, and supplies sprawled all over it; hanging from the ceiling, the walls, in piles on the floor, and the tables. He appeared to be in a rather large art studio. He noticed that every sketch, every painting, every piece of art, finished or otherwise, in this room revolved around landscape. If he had not have been so enthralled in his surroundings, he would have noticed the many emblems of the Keepers of the Brush surrounding him, though he would not have recognized it as such.
When they reached the steps,
Michael stopped, bowed slightly, and turned to Jack saying, “May I introduce to the council, the long awaited, one and only, Jack Staun.”
He heard a large inhale from the group surrounding him, just as a knock rang out from the door. Jack hadn’t even noticed it had closed behind them. He turned and looked, before glancing up at the council.
“Come in!” shouted the lead councilman irritably.
The tiger sitting next to him winced in pain at the sudden outburst. Jack turned and watched as the door slid open. Two men, one younger, one older approached rather quickly, rushing towards the council. Jack eyed them the closer they got, but they seemed too preoccupied to even see him at first.
“Ah, Jon! What great timing you have!”
Just as the older man was about to speak,
the younger caught Jack’s eye, and gasped. He elbowed the older man, who in turn passed a series of relief over his face.
“Jack!” Jon called out, veering his direction from the council to him.
He took Jack’s hand and hugged him. He was so relieved that they had found him that a few tears swept down his cheeks. Now that it came down to it, it felt relatively easy. ‘In fact, what was Jack doing there?’ He took a step back from Jack and looked him up and down.
Jack appeared to not recognize him.
