An Unexpected Winter
“I’m sorry,” Jack spoke,
“you do seem familiar to me; however I’m afraid I cannot place you.”
Just as Jon was about to explain, the council interrupted.
“Jon! What is the meaning of this? How is it you know who this man is?”
Jon took a deep breath, preparing to explain himself to the council, when the council unexpectedly relieved him.
“Well no matter Jon, we were just about to divulge the secrets of the brush to our new painter, here.”
“Your new painter?” he exchanged thankful glances with Aubrey.
“Which is why I have come, Kaiden, I was planning on teaching him on the job, Aubrey and me.”
“Since when?” Kaiden’s son, Conner, a fellow Keeper of the Brush, stepped forward.
“Conner,” Kaiden spoke sharply.
“No, it’s alright Kaiden. Conner, you are correct if you are insinuating that I do not take the time to train anyone personally who is not of my family. Your father is quite the same way, as was mine, and unless you choose to change that tradition, it will stay that way,” Conner took a sheepish step back.
“Jack is family.
Jack is Keeper Astraea’s fiancé, and I and Aubrey are going to train him, and take him home, to the palace where he belongs. That is, as long you have no objections, Kaiden?”
“None at all, however, there is one question I do have.”
“What is that Kaiden?”
“How long have you known this man, Jack Staun, is the lost season? How long did you know the whereabouts of Winter?”
Aubrey was taken aback. Jack stood still, listening and absorbing all. He couldn’t remember anything before he woke up that morning, except Raven’s death, but these men seemed to not only know him, but account for him, if they were telling the truth.
“I…” Jon started.
Sure that his father had never known, Aubrey interrupted.
“This is the first we are hearing it Kaiden. Jack was creative on Earth, so we naturally assumed he was a painter, but we had no idea he was a Season as well.”
He patted Jack on the shoulder.
Jon stayed quiet, waiting to see how it all would unfold. Aubrey knew nothing of his suspicions. He had not noticed the mark on Jack’s ear. His son did not know the tale of the lost season as well as he.
“I see,” Kaiden accepted this, with very little reason to do otherwise, “be sure to keep an eye on him, won’t you Jon? After all, he hasn’t painted in decades.”
“My thoughts exactly,” Jon breathed a sigh of relief.
“Come Jack, it’s time to go,” Aubrey nudged him quietly.
Jack took his turn bowing to the council,
before following these two men out. His mind was racing, he needed to find out what had happened, he needed to return to the last place he saw Raven, and retrace his steps. He needed to go to Farenton. He realized he had no idea how to do so. ‘These two men may be my only hope at finding out what happened and where she is,’ he told himself.
They had walked through a door that put them on the outskirts of Raiden. Neither Jon nor Aubrey knew quite what to do, but they were sure that if Astraea and Jack just saw each other, Jack would remember.
“So Jack,” Jon asked, “You don’t remember Aubrey… or me?”
“I do apologize, but as I said, though you feel familiar, I do not recognize you, either of you.”
“What do you remember?” Aubrey ventured.
The recently deceased often didn’t remember their lives right before they died.
Jack thought about this only briefly, before deciding to speak the truth, “I remember her, Raven, my wife. I remember her dying in my arms, me, unable to save her. You see, I must return to the last place I saw her, in order to piece together what happened after.”
Jon’s suspicions only further expanded, and he decided to know once and for all if he was right.
“Where is the last place you saw her?” asked Jon.
“Farenton. On the Emerald Isle.”
Jon breathed a sigh of relief.
He wrapped his arms around Aubrey and Jack as they walked. It appeared Jack didn’t remember Raea, and for a brief moment, Aubrey was relieved, but remembering the way she looked upon him as if he had stabbed her in the back, he quickly began to fret, thinking of how he could possibly make Jack remember. ‘If he just sees her…’ Aubrey thought to himself.
“Jack, we shall return you to Farenton, but tonight, I hope you will consent to stay with us in the city of Raiden?”
Jack nodded in agreement, “Thank you, Jon was it? That would suit me fine.”
“Yes, you may call me Jon, and my son, Aubrey,”
Jack shook Jon and Aubrey’s hands, and together they entered Raiden.
