The Bonds that Tie Us

“The Keeper Astraea,” Andean announced,

as I entered the drawing room.

The drawing room was a spacious room. The western walls were entirely made of glass windows, from the floor to the ceiling. A large cherry wood rod ran the length of the windows, allowing for large silver drapes to be pulled open or closed across the windows. At the northern end of the room sat a pale blue chaise lounge, and two large, sea-green loveseats, strategically arranged in a horseshoe figure. On the opposite wall, across from the windows, was a large columned three way facing fireplace. The floors were made from walnut trees, as was the fireplace mantel. At the southern end of the room there sat a long pale blue sofa, with two whicker white tables at each end. All of the furniture was placed slightly turned in order to face the fireplace. It was a pleasant comfortable setting, I thought as I entered from the southern end of the room.

“Hello, my dear. What kept you so late?” my Etherian mother kissed my cheek.

All of the gentlemen in the room stood when I entered

and returned to their previous positions when I sat.

“A very beautiful evening on Earth, one of my best paintings yet, I daresay,” I smiled.

I saw from the corner of my eye, Master Dyvin approaching, and braced myself for the encounter.

“Keeper Astraea,” he bowed and I bowed my head in response.

“Master Dyvin.”

“It’s a pleasure to see you again. I hope I am not a shock to you this evening,” he kissed my hand, causing my mother to immediately vacate her seat, leaving room for him to take a seat beside me.

“Of course, not. Won't you sit?”

“Thank you.”

We began small talk about this and that, and all the while I could not seem to stop comparing Master Dyvin with Mr. Staun.

For instance, Master Dyvin had blonde sunny hair which was long and straight, and hung down beautifully, though typically found to be pulled back in a low ponytail. Mr. Staun on the other hand, had dark thick black hair that didn’t fall below his chin. Master Dyvin had bright blue eyes and stood taller than me. As his family worked for the ocean, he was well built from turning the tides, but a lot of his muscle strength resided in his arms and chest. Mr. Staun on the other hand, had dark mysterious eyes, though the exact hue I couldn’t say… He stood tall above me, and though a well built man, it was more evenly disbursed on his body, making him appear to me larger and stronger than Master Dyvin.

As I thought about the color of Mr. Staun’s eyes,

Andean announced dinner and I caught the trail end of what Master Dyvin had been saying.

“…so do you think it could be arranged?”

“I am sure it could.”

I had no idea what he was talking about, but he smiled at my response, so I assumed my answer was what he had wanted to hear. I stood up, as did he.

“May I escort you?” I bowed slightly and accepted his arm.

Walking into the dining room, I smiled to myself, having a strong feeling of contentment. I was not entirely sure where it was coming from, but I welcomed the feeling with open arms.

After dinner, when the men separated from the women

to discuss subjects they considered inappropriate in front of us ladies, my mother asked, “Will you join me in the library?” my mother hooked my arm, not leaving me any choice to disagree.

The library was filled wall to wall with bookshelves, packed with books. The only space in the room not covered in books, was the large marble fireplace centered in the middle of the East wall. There were beautiful sea green love seats strategically placed near the fire, and two chartreuse chairs in the far north-western corner of the room, where a lit lantern sat on a table.

The floors were made of a dark cherry hardwood.

It was rather breath taking really.

“Mother, we are in the library, now what is it that you need from me?”

“What makes you think I need anything? Can your mother just want to be alone in the library with you?”

“Mother, you know as well as I do that there are many other things you’d prefer to do. What is it?”

“Oh, very well then; I want an explanation,” she sat down, staring pointedly at me. She casually walked over to the bookshelf next to the fireplace.

“I have no idea what you are talking about.”

“So we are going to have to take the hard route?”

I stood in silence.

“So be it. Come with me.”

My mother stood up, and walked towards the back

of the library, where she opened a door hidden inside the bookshelves. I was tempted to turn and walk back to the drawing room, but my curiosity got the better of me, for I had never seen this door, and knew not that it existed. I followed my mother through the door, and was amazed to see a room completely surrounded by large stained glass windows overlooking the forest surrounding the palace. Directly in front of my mother there was a writing desk, and two objects covered by cloth.

“I didn’t know this was here!”

“No, we’ve never shown it to you, and I wouldn’t be showing you now if I didn’t have too.”

“What are you…?” I stopped midsentence as my mother pulled a velvet cloth off of what appeared to be a large glass globe.

It seemed to represent Earth, but it had a blue light

source inside it that lit the globe. One particular branch of light was light pink however, and it was bridged from the center of the globe up to the surface, leaving a bright green dot on what looked like the Emerald Isle. As I stared at this magnetic globe, my mother pulled another velvet cloth off of another glass globe, only this one’s light source was purple. I turned to my mother, not understanding.

“Astraea, these globes as you must have assumed, represent Earth. This purple one is Aubrey’s. You know that his energy is purple. This globe with the blue light is yours. You see how Aubrey’s has no bridges of light leaving the center of the globe? Do you see how yours does?” I nodded.

“If I am not mistaken, you painted in the Emerald Isle this evening, did you not?” I nodded again, not understanding where she was going with this conversation.

“This bridge of light reaching to the Emerald Isle represents a connection, a connection with a human, I would assume.”

My mother turned and stared me down in silence. I stared at my globe, at the beautiful pink light… could it be him? Was he thinking about me too?
