Reconciliation 평화 협정

Divided families
Not by choice of their own

“Allies” of war drew out an invisible line
That is yours and this is mine

Not even a question as to what is theirs

Villages divided
One man alone
Lost in the south

Away from his hometown and family
With no relatives or kin to call his own

He cannot go back
The invisible line was now filled with mines
An iron fence marks the borders
Snipers on each side

For a time he took a tour to Gold mountain
(Geumgangsan)
He looked out to the country below
He could not see the kin his soul belonged to

He gave up hope and sold his rice Paju rice fields
To a real estate developer

At 82 years old the dream he really wanted
Was to see his family
Across the border

He knew he could never see his mom
Whom he left when he was a sprout
But to see his kin folk he could do nothing but shout

A separation for seventy years
Did not keep his heart from yearning

No one in his nation asked for the division
No one asked for life alone

No one asked

But it was done

No one can right the wrongs
No one can go back there and stop the atrocities
No one could foresee what this separation caused today

Men who flew flags of different colors
Now are now shaking hands and making jokes like friends
Is reconciliation at hand?

I sure hope so.

The word 평화 협정

(Pyeongwha Hyup-jung) is a Korean word that means peace agreement. As some of you know I am an American living in Korea and this morning rush hour was all messed up. It was even worse in my neighborhood.

In school this morning we watched the peace treaty live and I had a chance to talk about it with Korean kids. Some kids shared stories about their grandpa or grandma who was separated from the rest of the family.

They shared about their family names and how their extended family is all in North Korea. I don’t know what to make of the things I saw but I’m sure this will be a day to be remembered in history.

This is my 51st poem in the Steemitschool poetry competition @d-pend.(Steemitschool Discord) Pictures are public domain at pixabay.

Verse of the Day/ 2 Corinthians 5:20b-21

"We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Mineopoly Quote:

"I have to quote Abraham Lincoln, 'A house divided against itself cannot stand.'"

QTTA: (QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT)

How do you think the North and South peace treaty will play in the financial market? What can you see for the future of these Koreas?

I love you all.

It seems there is some hope that the two Koreas will finally ease their tedius relationship and people from both sides can go and meet their relatives. Let's hope that future will make the short fat man a bit more reasonable.

Good morning and thank you for your comment @alketcecaj. You are right. It has been a tedious relationship and the countries have been tense so long. I hope for some peace. Most of the direct relatives have died but the extended family is a problem a lot of kids talked about. A few kids shared the same story that their grandpa was the only living relative in South Korea and the rest of the family was in North Korea. I am no expert in history and politics but I would really like to see their hopes realized. Yet no one can really trust a country with such a track record. This is going to be an interesting year.

I was looking for it! Thank you very much :-)

I saw on the news were the Korean leaders made a peace deal. A new era of peace would be wonderful.
Great poem as always Christopher.

peace is clearly the goal. the only problem i have is that this kinda event has happened multiple times. they all ended badly. with north koreans stabbing you in the back. talking about peace and shooting missiles the next day.
kim jung un is a guy who kills his own family to maintain his dictatorship. so my initial reaction is more like 'north korea is getting ready to invade us now' 😨

Great write, mineopoly:)

If it were in my power, I would make war illegal. I think if people understood they were not just declaring war on dictators and soldier but families and children, we would find another way.

God will do it and will reunite the divided families again. Something that should never have happened. But happiness is good when it comes to it.
