YourMateTravels#14 - Rome Layover With Different Tastes

What!? 17°C are freezing cold. Brrr.
Alright, 18 hours till the next flight.
Change clothes, adjust, get my act together, go.

Best way to the city is the train, so I get a ticket for a reasonable price. As I roll on my skateboard towards the platform, some policemen suddenly shout at me “Get off your board! This is a train station!”.
Welcome back to europe.

Was!? 17°C sind verdammt kalt. Brrr.
Alright, 18 Stunden bis zum nächsten Flug.
Umziehen, anpassen, zusammenreißen und ab geht’s.

Am besten & günstigsten gelangt man mittels Zug in die Stadt. Als ich mit meinem Skateboard Richtung Bahnsteig rolle, werde ich plötzlich von Polizisten angeschrien “Runter vom Skateboard! Das ist eine Zustation!”
Wiilkommen zurück in Europa.

The Heart Of Rome

Fortunately I managed to book a nice apartment in the center for a promotion price back in Singapore.

I take a power nap, then a shower, push the jetlag aside, grab a map and head out the door.
What can I do in time? Checking walking times on Google Maps I decide to see the “Pantheon” and the “Colosseum”

Glücklicherweise konnte ich in Singapore noch ein zentrale gelegenes schönes Apartment buchen.

Ich mach einen Power-Nap, gehe duschen, schiebe den Jetlag zur Seite, schnapp mir ‘ne Karte und starte raus.
Was schaff ich in kurzer Zeit? Ich schau mir die Gehzeiten auf Google Maps an und entscheide mich für das “Pantheon” und das “Kolosseum”.

First things first: pizza.

Aber zuerst: Pizza.

My spider senses are tingling. I can feel the crime. Beware.
After 3 minutes into walking I’m offered drugs. 50 meters ahead I see the next dealer. I don’t mind - what I mind are pickpockets.

Mein sechster Sinn schlägt an. Ich kann das Verbrechen förmlich spüren. Bleib achtsam.
Nach 3 MInuten gehen werden mir das erste Mal Drogen angeboten. 50 Meter weiter steht der nächste Dealer. Das ist mir egal - Taschendiebe hingegen nicht.

Once again I realize I don’t dig sightseeing. It’s all cool. I’m just way more down for experiencing a country than looking at things like an asian dictator (if you don’t get it, google “looking at things”).

Abermals stelle ich fest, dass ich mit Sightseeing nichts anfangen kann. Es ist eh lässig. Mich interessiert aber viel eher ein Land zu erleben, als es wie ein asiatischer Diktator nur anzusehen (falls du das nicht verstehst, google “looking at things”).

Ok, one more try. “Colosseum”.
On my way I see so much police, Carabineri & military. Unbelievable. Europe.

OK, ein Versuch noch. “Kolosseum”.
Am Weg sehe ich so viel Polizei, Carabineri & Miliär. Unglaublich. Europa.

Nah, Imma get some more pizza.

Ne, lieber mehr Pizza.

Pickpocket

As I leave for the taxi at the “Colosseum”, some grinning black guy calls me in a friendly way, nervously walks over to me and hands me a wristband. “I’m from Kenya. That’s a gift! Take it!”
He’s restless, goes back and forth, sideways. Either Crystal Meth and/or he wants to distract me.

First of all I look around quickly to check for his accomplices. None visible. Friendly I reject the offer, but already have it in my hand. What we do now kinda looks like a dance, I want to give it back, he wants to rob me. Checking my surroundings every few seconds but still fixating him with my eyes. He calls me rude and a racist for not accepting the offer; another trick. I know what he is about - he knows that I know.
He does one more approach “look I can help you put it on”, pushes up my sleeve - apparently checking for a watch on my wrist - and I pull back sharply. Giving him the death stare I tell him to take his stuff. He knows what’s up, takes it and leaves.

1 minute later he’s at the next victim.

Now I still ask myself why I didn’t just drop his stuff and told him to f_ck off. It’s rather hard being rude to people when they’re friendly I tell you. Another trick of ‘em.

Als ich mich vom Kolosseum zum Taxi aufmachen will, ruft ein grinsender schwarzer Typ ganz freundlich nach mir. Er kommt nervös auf mich zu und drückt mir ein Armband in die Hand. “Ich bin von Kenia. Das ist ein Geschenk! Nimm es!”
Er ist ruhelos, geht vor und zurück, oftmals seitwärts. Entweder auf Crystal Meth und/oder er will mich ablenken.

Zuallererst schaue ich mich schnell nach Komplizen um. Keine zu sehen. Freundlich lehne ich das Angebot ab, habe das Teil aber schon in der Hand. Was wir nun machen, sieht aus wie ein Tanz; ich möchte es zurückgeben, er möchte mich ausrauben. Während ich mich alle paar Sekunden umsehe, halte ich ihn immer mit den Augen fixiert. Er nennt mich unhöflich und einen Rassisten, weil ich ablehne; noch ein Trick von ihm. Ich weiß, was er will - er weiß, dass ich es weiß.
Er wagt einen weiteren Anlauf “schau, ich kann’s dir gleich draufmachen”, schiebt meinen Ärmel rauf - offenbar klaut er gerne Armbanduhren - und ich ziehe meine Hand schnell zurück. Ich starre ihm tief in die Augen und rate ihm, sein Teil zurückzunehmen. Er versteht, nimmt sein Teil und zieht leine.

1 Minute später probiert er’s beim nächsten.

Ich frage mich immer noch, weshalb ich es nicht einfach fallen gelassen und ihm gesagt habe, dass er schei_en gehen soll. Es fällt mir wirklich schwer grob zu sein, wenn jemand freundlich ist. Ein weiterer Trick von ihnen.

Italian Food At It’s Finest

Before going to bed I treat myself with some great italian wine and food:

I realize I need a new phone with a better camera. Gotta take care of that back home.

Ich stelle fest, dass ich ein neues Handy mit einer besseren Kamera benötige. Das mach ich dann daheim. Auf geht’s!

Oh btw people asked me why I got a golden lady suitcase haha. Simple: I ordered online, thinking it was brown, and got it just in time for departure.

Oh übrigens: man hat mich gefragt, weshalb ich einen goldenen Frauenkoffer habe. Ganz einfach: Ich habe online bestellt, dachte er wäre braun und bekam ihn gerade rechtzeitig für den Abflug.
