Five minute free write - Fart

'Zombie farts are the absolute worst' Sara using two fingers to close up her nose. A group of gnarly corpses rested in various positions around the room each with an implement of death firmly lodged in a vital organ. Two severed heads rested at the young girls feet.

'No kidding...' said Lucy wiping the blade of her machete off on some dead store clerks smock. 'You're just figuring this out? I mean, I know this whole end of the world thing is pretty new, but, you've used that joke like 6 times already. Can't you come up with something new?'

'Your sense of humor is dead...'

'Just like my parents...'

Sarah paused for a second....Lucy looked thoughtfully out the window of the house. 'Maybe a little too soon,' brushing away a tear.

'Gotta get used to that in the new world order.'

'Yeah, I guess from now on we'll think of the good old days when 45 was our president...'

'Seriously? Now that definitely is too soon. Though I'm sure he'd have a relevant tweet.'

Fingers up ready with quotes, 'Zombie apocalypse...FAKE NEWS!'

Lucy laughed. Sara laughed.

'Okay, we really needed that.'

How do you get through a writing block? Write tons of stupid stuff. Dialogue...how do you get it to sound good? Write tons of stupid stuff. Is any of it good? Does any of it make sense? Meh, who knows :) That's why I love these writing prompts...when I have the courage to engage them, especially when they're weird like this. I could have done one on farting in space but that might have been a bit juvenile, lol.

No deep thoughts for this prompt...like I said, lots of writers block yesterday. Depression sucks. My mind is focused on drawing. And I need to find some work. So, see you in my next post! Hopefully later today. Need to attempt to break through the block more so that my family doesn't forget me :)

Hope everyone's having a solid Tuesday!
Michael

Very imaginative use of the prompt - it's been tricky today. This was a great way to turn the obvious fart joke write on its head.

I actually tend to prefer writing dialogue rather than descriptions, or I find it easier. There's only so many things a person can say in a given situation, but practically an infinite number of things that could be going on around them...

Maybe set yourself some writing exercises where you just write 1-page micro plays? I used to do that when I was struggling with it. It forces you to tell the story through dialogue alone, and I think telling the story is at its core what the best dialogue does.

I'd be eager to read them if you posted them to steemit! Either way, looking forward to your next write :)

Interesting idea...1 page micro plays. I just kind of did something like that with @stach's 199 constrained story challenge. Tough, but fun. For me it's finding the idea to drape over the framework that's the hardest. Guess I should do some studying about the common stories that just have their serial numbers filed off and new ideas inserted, hehe.

Thanks for dropping by! :)

serial numbers filed off and new ideas inserted

Haha, that's a one way ticket to Hollywood my friend. There's definitely a lot to be said for following the tried and tested story formats. Many of them go back millennia - it's hard to compete with something like that, practically baked into our genetic code.

Heheh, baked. I agree :)

I really liked your freewrite, it painted a great picture with a silly prompt lol I also enjoyed what you wrote about breaking through writing blocks. I feel like dialogue can be hardest for me.

It's such a natural thing to do in real life...but translating it into writing, ugh. Like taking pictures...cramming a 3D world into a 2D one...how to do it right so things sound right :\ Thanks for dropping by :)

It does make sense, so keep writing until you get over the problems you're having.
I did watch eight seasons of The Walking Dead - never heard of zombies farting, though :)

Woot :) Glad to hear that. Sooooo many different zombie lores out there. They probably don't fart, since there's no digestion...but corpses do as they release the gas in the stomach...ewww.

I agree dialogue can be very hard to write, I think keeping it as natural as possible, short snappy sentences, nothing too verbose.. Good job in the freewrite there too by the way... It's fun having a light hearted prompt 👍

Hehe, I can make even the most light-hearted prompts into something sinister. Depending on my mood ;) Lol. But, yeah, good to keep it light as much as possible. Dialogue...eventually I'll get better. Until then, experimentation!! :)

I enjoyed your dialogue. Eww zombie farts, for sure. I empathize with your depression. Hang in there, Mike.

A constant fight between my logical brain and my emotional brain. Just need to catch a break in life and I think things could get better. But, 4 time in a month I've had someone say 'You're hired' and then ghost me...so...trust in people and the universe is a wee bit slim.

Oh man! I can imagine that feeling :( I hope you can get a steady job soon.

Heh, been trying for 7 years with no luck. Had a part time job in MPLS for like 6 months before I moved here. But that's it. People confuse me. A lot.

I can see why. What kind of jobs are you seeking now?

Honestly, I've kinda given up. Mostly I'm just focused on creating right now and hoping the gigs come in. So far it hasn't been horrible. Selling my first drawing tonight :) Figured since no one will hire me I just have to create demand for myself.

I hope that we never get to a place terrible enough that we look fondly on the times of 45

The scary point is that he's setting off so much that we'll remember the time as he was doing it fondly...when we thought we could still fight back...the crazy years are coming. Food, resources, water, wealth...not gonna be a pretty part of human history when the future looks back. But, until then, we gotta do our best to make the world an awesome place to whatever extent we can :)

As everyone else said, great dialogue and really well done getting Trump in there too.
It’s Wednesday; so here I am again with the latest prompt:;https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-174-5-minute-freewrite-wednesday-prompt-vandals

Yeah, no idea where he came from, but as I was writing and the text was graying out because of The Most Dangerous Writing App getting impatient it just kinda popped out :) I mean, zombies, apocalypse, 45...all seems to fit together nicely. Too nicely... lol :) Thanks for dropping by. Just dropped my free write for vandals
