Five minute free write - Coconuts

Her toes dug deep into the warm white sand, just outside the shadow where the chair sat.

Legs stretched out with a book it was a perfect day. The light breeze brought with it just hints of the ocean that washed up just a stones throw from where she relaxed.

It was hot, but not so much in the shade. Fronds from the coconut tree kept her cool. The last months had been hellish. One thing after another, piling up until even Atlas had to shrug. But, now she was here. Enjoying the life she had always wished for while clicking through Pintrest. She had even convinced her new boyfriend to join her.

One adventure after another.

Taking paths she'd always thought were for someone else. Risks once avoided, but now embraced. And, here, now, reading through the list of books she'd kept since childhood, all was good.

Standing with her arms raised to heaven she let out a giant yawn and flexed her back into some yoga position the resort had taught her the other day. Where had her guy gone again? Drinks...yes, some drinks. The one thing they had forgotten on their walk out.

Laughing to herself, if that's the worst of her problems, that was just fine with her.

A daiquiri, that's what she'd asked for. Strawberry, if possible. Sweet, filled with alcohol, and everything she could possibly want at the moment.

Eyes staring into the distance the memories of the months flashed by, weightless now that she was here. Behind her she heard a rustle of bushes, grass, feet in the sand. Turning with a smile her eyes fell upon something she had not expected. Not expected at all.

The scream that clawed its way from her throat was animalistic. Filled with sorrow and fear.

Zombies. Just in case you're wondering.

I wouldn't mind a vacation myself, on some faraway shore where ocean meets sand.

Though, I'd like to keep the drama in the distance. As invigorating as fighting off hordes of the undead might be, and as much character it might build and relationships with fellow survivors it might engender. I'd rather keep my beaches clean. Unless it involves aliens and lasers...because that's a much more hopeful scenario.

Did you ever think about that? How zombies are apocalyptic and aliens are hopeful?

Even the ones who try and destroy us, the tale is one of overcoming adversity and becoming a greater, stronger species. But, zombies, plain survival and hope that we don't end at this point.

I didn't, until just now. Man do I love this Five minute free write put on by the lovely @mariannewest. It really gets the juices flowing. The ability to look at a prompt and create something from it, to see where the unconscious pathways take you...exciting :)

Hope y'all have a great day!
Michael
