Five minute free write - speaker

Underneath the silver gray dome sat row after row of dull blue blocks of cement and steel that strained upwards into the sky. Air, thick with the waste of greed circulated slowly . Humanity sat, watching, waiting, listening. A species together as one with their breath held.

From small speakers under glowing screens around the world came moment by moment updates from the speck of manmande metal that sparkeled out of site above the artificial roofs. Each hiss, click, shusssssssh brought them closer and closer to the small hope they had for the future.

As one they had come together to fight against the stupidity, the ignorance, the greed. To see the planet for what it was and know that they were not alone in the universe. Science had shown them the what, the way, and the why. Some hadn't believed. A tale too tall to swallow. Of a being that was the planet, a chance to heal what had been mortally wounded, a hope that lay with coming together and stretching up and up and up.

Together they listened as one.

It's been a minute since I've written about this universe. For some of you who have been following me for a while, you might recognize strands of a story that started with a free write about a button or something, which grew into a story from multiple perspectives about humanity launching a vessel into space as the last hope for the planet. I don't know why, but when I saw the prompt my head suddenly imagined billions of people gathered in front of their tv's listening like hey did back during the moon landings, everyone on edge, breathless, waiting, hoping....

My minds been in some weird places lately.

I've been stretching it to the limits trying to grow, especially when it comes to ideas. But, with recent writing, a focus has seemed to emerge. A certain muscle that's been screaming to be flexed. I think it's pretty hit-me-over-the-head obvious.

A deep seated frustration with the insanity of peoples greed, willingness to bury their heads in the sand, and an utter lack of regard for the community called humanity.

Why, as a species, are we continuing to subdivide as a civilization and try and find more and more differences with each other and fight over them? I mean, as an evolutionary tactic it's counterproductive. The bigger the group, the stronger the force it can bring to bear on everything. Yet, on a day-to-day basis things seem to be getting worse. Countries, religions, colors, politics, I mean, seriously? Wtf? We're not all that different from each other.

How hard is it to see that people are the same no matter their color, religion, origin, whatever? Do you want to eat good food? Have a nice home? Have a lovely mate that loves you? Do you wish to live happily? That's all any human really wants.

I'm gonna stop this 5 minute rant within the five minute free write, lol. Hope you enjoyed it! Would love to hear what you think about my story, my ideas, my writing :)

It really makes you think though, doesn't it? The direction civilization is taking. Not much is civilized anymore. It brought back memories of when my son was in single digits and he asked me why people can't just get along. This came about after his best friend was being bullied. Now it also seems everything is turning into a racial thing. If the tables were turned the other way, no one would give a damned. We are all humans. We all breathe, bleed, cry, love, hurt and so much more. So, I find your posts as a wheel turner (for the brain.) I wonder if it would really happen, in an attempt to save humankind.

It all starts with us trying a little harder to be good to the person next to us, not hiding from reality by denying all the bad that's going on, and trying to be the best people we can. I mean, no one is perfect, and we do live in a world that promotes fighting hardest to protect yourself and damn the everyone else. But, but by bit. Like you said, we're all human, we all want the same thing, and we can all get it if we just work together :) You might like a short story I just did: https://steemit.com/story/@mikesthoughts/five-minute-free-write-sort-of-whiteboard

Hope you have an awesome day!

😍😍😍

ranting right along with you... we are just not very civilized and greed rules - or is represented big time in the rulers. But that also has a wakened a movement of people who want to live differently.
I thought the hippies were getting it together - but then, came the yuppies. Now, we swang big time into the insanity we hear about every day on the new. I am thinking the pendulum is coming back soon.
Then, we need to find a way to keep things in the zone where peace and harmony reign.

Hopefully so. My mind just can't get off the topic, hehe. My free write for whiteboard got kinda interesting...and kinda long. Short story about a classroom in the future :)

And yet, in some spot, a group of people are enjoying the sun under a canopy of trees unaware of the first-world problems. I want to be with them.

BTW, here is the link to today's prompt: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-154-5-minute-freewrite-thursday-prompt-nothing

Mmmm, so true. Was just watching Anthony Bourdain in Laos...pretty much like that. The life we think we need to lead to be happy isn't necessarily true. Lots of ways to live and be happy :)

Thank you @mikesthoughts. And I totally agree with your "humanity" observation.

Seems like it's gotten really worse with the Tribalism in America right now under the current leadership

Ugh, yeah, Tribalism on a massive scale. They hide it by calling them niches..in lovely marketing terms...and continue to segregate us more and more based upon our desires...which is messed up because at the core we all want the same things...but they keep on telling us they're different things.

Wrote a short story off another prompt you might find interesting. Using storytelling to try and figure out exactly what I think about the world, and how we can work to fix it :) https://steemit.com/story/@mikesthoughts/five-minute-free-write-sort-of-whiteboard

Hope you have an awesome day!
