In 1957, Russia launched "the sputnik" ('traveller", the world's first artificial satellite in space. As a reaction, the U.S. launched its own satellite, Explorer I, in 1958. Thus, the space-race began. It also created NASA (National Aeronatutics and Space Administration) dedicated to space adminstation. There were many other stages in the cold war. But gradually, the superpowers realised the Uselessness of war strategy. They began to follow a policy of peaceful the co-existene. By 1990, with the disintegration of the USSR, the cold war virtually ended.
