In the beginning earth was a barren planet. There was no atmosphere. It was continuously bombarded by Meteorites (millions of rocky fragments that were revolving around sun). These created huge craters. This continuous bombardment caused the earth's rocky surface to melt. At last, the bombardment stopped. The surface cooled. But this newly solidified surface had trapped gases beneath it. The pressure increased and gases burst through the crust, called volcanoes. The gases (hydrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and nitrogen) collected to form a new atmosphere around the earth, Water Vapour rose to form the clouds. When the intense heat of sun began to cool, rain started to fall. It was the longest monsoon the earth ever saw. It rained continuously for thousands of years. The basins of the land were filled up. Thus, the great oceans were created. This is how the oceans were born on earth.
