Over a thousand year ago the Chinese want to makes noise to scare away "evil spirits." They notice that bamboo explodes in a fire as the air brust from natural segments. Later someone searching for a potion to prolong life accidentally discover gun powder. Next gun powder is placed in the bamboo. When lit the firecracker goes off with a bang. Today, fireworks, guns and rocket still work in similar way.
