"Name Your Top 3 All-Time Favorite Movies" 30 Days Writing Challenge - Day 19

I have very few hobbies becuase I'm usually busy working (writing). However, I have always and will always love watching movies. I don't get to the theater much to watch newer movies, but I do stream movies nearly every day from the comfort of my hone.

My Top 3 Favorite Movies of All-Time

Before jumping into my favorite movies of all-time, I feel compelled to tell you that I believe there is a significant difference between a good movie and an enjoyable one. Some of the greatest movies of all-time would not be on my list of my favorite movies, and many movies I enjoy would be considered terrible movies by most.

For example Schindler's List is an incredible movie, but it is very difficult to watch. It may be one of the best movies created, but it's not one of my favorite movies to watch.

Without stalling any further, here are the three movies I would consider to be my top 3 favorite's of all-time:

#1. Jurrasic Park

This was an extremely difficult choice to make, and I'm not sure if I will still feel this way tomorrow, but as of today, the movie I would put at the very top of my list of favorite movies is Jurrasic Park. At the time it came out, I had never seen anything like it, and I think the impact of watching it with all of the lights off and the surround sound turned all the way up made the experience so much better. I also love movies with catchphrases that I'll remember for the rest of my life, whether a comedy or action film, and this one has so many:

  • "Clever girl."
  • "Life finds a way."
  • "Hold onto your butts."
  • "Ah, ah, ah, you didn't say the magic word."

#2. Terminator 2

At one point in my life, I owned DVDs of every single arnold schwarzenegger film, even the obscure ones like Hercules in New York. The favorite of all of them would have to be Terminator 2. For a movie made in 1991, the action scenes are incredible. From the very first time I watched it, I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen. If you haven't seen it and like cheesy action films like I do, then watch this immediately, just remember that it was made 27 years ago.

#3. Tie: The Rock/Face-Off

I'm a sucker for late-1990's Nicholas Cage action movies. I know I shouldn't love them, but damnit, I do. I couldn't leave one of these two gems off of my list, so my 3rd favorite movie of all-time is a tie between The Rock (1996) and Face-Off (1997).

The Rock is star-studded with Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris and others as military-trained domestic terrorists hold tourists hostage at Alcatraz. Cage, a chemical specialist, is sent with a large team (all killed outside of Connery) to disarm the chemical weapons the terrorists plan to unleash on America. It's great fun with many bad catchphrases and action scenes that you'll want to watch again and again.

Face-Off is considered to be a dumb action movie by many, but I absolutely love this film, mainly for the action scenes which I still think haven't been topped to this day. Cage and Travolta face each other as rivals (Cage a terrorist and Travolta part of the CIA) and later wear each others faces (yeah, I know it sounds dumb). There's still plenty to like if you love a fun action film.

I think besides my own post, this is the first one I've read where the author has listed all three (or four) movies I've actually seen.

Jurassic Park is classic. Hard to beat a Spielberg movie that's based on a Crichton novel. I would put it above Jurassic World any day, even though that movie was good. Just not as good as the original. We'd never seen dinosaurs like the ones in Jurassic Park before and that made all the difference.

Terminator 2 turned the franchise from a cult hit into a box office success and followed up Cameron's monster hit with Titanic. The use of the new special effect technique for the T-1000 was awesome, and converting Schwarzeneggar's original Terminator from the villain to the hero was a master twist.

Face Off And The Rock are classic Cage movies, and though I've only seen them on TBS/TNT, I would say I enjoyed both of them. There's just something about Cage that I like, even if his characters, and him, are just a bit off. I liked him in Gone In Sixty Seconds and the National Treasure movies, as well as Next.

All great points. It's hard for me to toss aside nostalgia when ranking my personal favorite movies. A lot of comedy movies went through my head as well, but there's just something about these action films I can't get enough of. Sudden Death, Long Kiss Goodnight, Sum of All Fears -- there's a bunch. They aren't "good" movies, but they are very enjoyable.

I guess that's why they have box office blockbusters and they have movies that win at The Academy Awards. :) It doesn't happen very often that you have a widely watched movie win an Oscar, and very rarely does it happen to an action film, outside of something like special effects or something like that. It's too bad, really, because some great performances are turned in by characters in those movies, and the best action movies have good stories to them as well as character development. The spectacle gets in the way, I guess. :)

You forgot Con Air haha jk. I have lots of favorite movies, to narrow it down to 3 is nearly impossible. I love action movies and comedies and action/comedies like Demolition Man.
