My Love Affair With Masks; Entry 12

This is my 12th installment in the personal mask collection series. This one was picked up on a trip back to the ancestral home of our family, Czechoslovakia. We landed in Budapest and traveled to Bratislava. While we were there mainly to see the sights, we also did a little family research and located some of our unfamiliar relatives. Needless to say we were unable to communicate very clearly and had to find a suitable translator to carry on a conversation, but the experience is one I will not soon forget. Very few people take the time to try and trace their roots back to a place of origin, or look up possible relatives while there; I can say I got to do both of those, and as a matter of fact, I still maintain contact with 3 of the relatives I met over there, all of whom want to come visit the United States...I suppose some day soon we will have to make that happen! I was told that this mask features the Hungarian Snow Ghost...however, I feel as though something was lost in translation...a snow-ghost normally refers to a coniferous tree that is so overladen with snow you cannot see any of the tree itself. In any case, local legend says that the Hungarian Snow Ghost snatches up small children while they are out wandering through the woods, eventually burying them in the snow never to be seen or heard from again.
