The Reports from the Witnesses 2018-04-22

in #witness-category6 years ago

The Reports from the Witnesses aims to provide the community with a summary of what all the witnesses have been up to. Every week, I collect all of the reports from the individual witnesses and assemble them into a single aggregated report. New witness announcements and witness retirement announcements are included in the report as well.

Witnesses can continue posting their posts to the witness-category and/or witness-update tags, and I will assemble everything I find there. If I miss any reports, just let me know and I will correct it. If you want to direct message me a report via chat, that is fine too.

Historic Reports from the Witnesses can be found here:

So without further ado, I bring you the seventieth edition of 'Reports from the Witnesses'!

New Witness Announcements:

@danielsaori - 4/16/2018

Some Notes:

  • Many witnesses do not report every week, and prefer to only report when they have updates.
  • I recommend that you include communication as one of your criteria for evaluating witnesses, but keep in mind - it is not the only criteria. There are some witnesses that prefer to work "behind the scenes", and do not do much as far as reports.
  • For witnesses that are not currently posting any reports, I would encourage you to provide the community with at least some insight into what you are currently working on :)

Remember to vote for witnesses!

Sometimes I forget about these guys as they're not right "out front" when I login. I've voted for a few ( you're one of them Tim), and posts like this remind me to consider the others, thanks!

EVERYBODY, VOTE FOR WITNESSES!

Did steemit get attacked the other day? Thanks for keeping people informed.

There was a period of time when my witness node had some trouble keeping up with the latency of the network, and I missed 8 blocks. Along with that, there was heavy usage on the network and people's bandwidth allowances were significantly reduced.

There are some more details in the witness channel of steem.chat.

Is this true? My bandwidth got reduced like 99.99 percent.
https://steemit.com/bandwidth/@mysearchisover/steemit-gets-attacked-107

During times of heavy use (including heavy spam) the blockchain does temporarily reduce the bandwidth allowances of all users (including the spammer(s)).

I hope you guys are able to defend it from the DDOS spammers. I do have some confidence but it does seem like steemit has a fair amount of glitches already.

Well, it is important to separate out Steemit (the website) from Steem (the blockchain). The bandwidth rules are pretty good at preventing any DOS type of attack on the blockchain, and the 'maximum block size' is an additional protection. If steemit.com has issues, there are plenty of other websites to use instead (busy.org, etc.).

I think I did hear that busy.org didn't succumb to the DOS spam attack attack. I think it was the way it was set up. Awesome reply. I wish my vote was worth .02 or more so I could upvote you.

:) glad I could help

Tim thank you for making the reports easy to find from all witnesses each week!

Thanks for the Witness updates @timcliff because it's good to know what exactly these witnesses are doing for steem Blockchain and what are their future steps also.

It's really irritating when we post something and got our first Comment from a low Reputation bot 😐

thank you for putting all the information in one place!

  1. I asked 2 account sellers and got no response from either.
How can an account be sold?
Once it is owned, its passwords are knowable to its owner, and the buyer seems to be at risk.

  2. What does it mean when one account creates another?
Does it mean the creator has the created's passwords?
Or does it only mean that it paid for it?

  3. How does account restoration work?
    How is it possible?
Does it not mean that it can be hacked by whatever party created or restored it?

  1. The sale would be done "off-chain". You would arrange with the person you want to sell the account to. Person A would send funds to person B, and person B would send their keys to person A. Technically the blockchain supports an 'escrow' service, but you would need to find someone willing to fill that role and with the technical know-how to do it. As soon as person B sends the keys to person A, person A would immediately change their keys. It would take 30 days before person B would no longer be able to "recover" the account though using the stolen account recovery.
  2. There are lots of different services to create accounts, and how the keys are handled depends on the method used. To create an account, someone needs to generate a public/private key pair. This is usually done by the person creating the account, but it could be done by the person whose account it will be. To actually create the account, the creator just needs to call the 'create account' API and supply the public keys.

Thanks Tim... things have been looking up. I haven't heard much about the witness situation lately, ty

so many withness....how to know who to chose to vote for?

There is a witness voting guide linked in the main post :)
