Mindy thought that there was the smallest possibility that she was Claire reborn. This sometimes entered her thoughts because she had the idyllic marriage. She and Cyrus got along as if they had known each other their whole lives even though she knew it was not possible. She had no recollection of any memories other than her own.
The real reason her marriage did so well was, one she was loved, and two Cyrus was very happy. He was happy with Mindy and he was ecstatic he had a son named Eon. He hoped to father more children but so far that had not happened. He really did not care that he only had one child, a son. He felt lucky, like he was reborn with Eon.
Eon was about a month past his second birthday and walking very well. He was a strong happy little boy and contrary to what Rephael had said, who was also supposed to be his son? Cyrus did not understand that at all but then who would, Eon was normal in every way. Nothing strange had ever happened that Cyrus was aware of and he thought that Rephael was wrong, not his son, and that all the strange things that had happened were due to the evil Rephael had described.
Because he was married and because he was a father, Cyrus took his ranching seriously again in the last two years. In the spring of 1856, he bought two dairy cows and a dairy bull. He also bought another section or square mile of land with his savings.
With the extra land, Cyrus increased his herd and in the last two years they now had four hundred and fifty cows. The total size of the herd was now seven hundred and fifty head. So, Cyrus did well and increased with Mindy at his side. He hired an extra hand named Louis Holk.
With the extra hand, Cyrus built a bunkhouse. He also added two rooms to the house so the parlor would be larger, the kitchen against the north wall just like it had been before and there was an extra bedroom with a closet and an indoor bathroom area.
Little Eon, Cyrus could tell he would be big like his Daddy over six feet tall, often ran from the house to the barn and back. Someone always held his hand walking up or down the hill for safety.
Just after his second birthday, in February because it was really warm, Eon was allowed to play in front of the house while he was supervised. After all, there was always a chance that a wild varmint, or a unkindly stranger might come by the ranch. Eon had to be protected and so Mindy learned to shoot very well at close range.
It was on the Third of March, 1858 when outside on a lovely day, for some reason Eon took off to the east toward the road. Mindy sat in a chair out in front of the house and churned butter while Eon ran around like an excited puppy.
Before she knew it, eon managed to get himself fifty yards to the east of the house.
"Eon, come back." Mindy yelled but it was no use. Eon was chasing a butterfly as it fly along in a skittering path that butterflies of wing along. Up and down, side to side, the butterfly took Eon further and further away from the house until Mindy decided she needed to jump up and run after him. Calling while she ran, Eon just giggled and continued after the butterfly.
Mindy gained on him but he had a very good head start and it was a chasing game to Eon. Quickly, he was almost to the road east. Mindy was just a few paces behind Eon and about to catch him when Eon disappeared. Poof! Eon was gone from sight.
Mindy looked everywhere for him. She panicked and began screaming for Eon. "Eon come to Mama! Eon where are you?"
The land where Eon disappeared was fairly flat with sage, grass, and a few small rocks but nothing that a baby could hide behind especially when Mindy was right behind her son. She began to grow frantic.
She spun around in circles calling for Eon so loud that Cyrus and the hand Holk heard her and came up to find out what was the matter.
Quickly, all three searched for Eon who was nowhere to be found. Cyrus sent Holk for the horses so they could begin a mounted search. "Isn't this where he was born?" Cyrus asked Mindy when Holk had left.
"I think it might be I don't know for sure. Eon, come to Mama!" Mindy answered and then called more.
"The road is at it should be." Cyrus said looking around, "So there is no time change."
"Yes, he was born right about here." Mindy said as she examined the area very closely. "I remember that rock right there being ten feet away from me to the north. Eon! Come to Mama!"
"Is this where you lost sight of him?" Cyrus asked.
"Right here are his last footprints," Mindy pointed to the ground.
"They end right here at this very spot. No eagle swooped down did it?"
"No, Eon was right in front of me and he just disappeared. Eon!"
Cyrus stood on Eon's very last footprints, "He is about this tall, right Mindy?" Cyrus held out his hand.
"Yes, that is exactly right, Cyrus where is my baby?"
"Cyrus stuck his hands forward and, "I feel something. Eon come to Daddy." Cyrus said soothingly. "Got him!" Cyrus pulled and eon appeared in his hands.
"Oh thank God!" Mindy screamed in joy running the few steps to Cyrus.
"Let's back away from this spot Mindy." Cyrus said backing Eon away in his arms.
"Yes, good idea. Is he all right?" Mindy asked.
"He looks like he has seen a ghost but appears fine. A little shaken."
"Let me take him." Mindy said and as soon as she had Eon in her arms he started to cry. "Cyrus, mark the spot."
"I'll fence it off so he can't get into it."
"There, there my little man." Mindy soothed her son. "Oh thank you for thinking he might be there Cyrus and grabbing him."
"You are most welcome. I have marked the spot and is he all right?"
"Just frightened I think." Mindy kissed her baby.
Holt came up the hill with the horses while setting one. "Found him?"
"Yes, we found him. Holt we are going to need to build a fence right now right there at that rock."
"Sounds good, I'll hitch up the wagon and load it with all we'll need below."
"Yep." Cyrus said as he walked with Mindy into the house and closed the door behind them. Inside the house, Mindy fed Eon immediately while sitting in the chair.
"Rephael was right. There is something different about Eon. I don't know what but we should keep him away from that spot, don't you think?"
"Oh yes, whatever happened, I don't think he could hear us, or if he could, my screaming for him might have made him froze, do you think?"
"I do but we will fence it off right now so he cannot go there because this has never happened that you know of anywhere else right?"
"No, this has never happened, not ever."
"I wish that Rephael would come back and answer some questions."
"He said he is Eon grown up and he said he could not be around Eon that much, remember?"
"I had forgotten that, so much happened." Cyrus looked at Eon, "If you think he is fine I am going to get to that fence, right now."
"I think he is fine." Mindy answered Cyrus then talked to Eon, "You full? Huh? My baby all full now?" Mindy burped Eon and then there was a big smile on his face and he reached out for Cyrus and said, "DaDa."
"That's his first real words. He just called me DaDa." Cyrus said.
"Yes it is. What a day it is, what a wonderful if not a little too exciting day." Mindy said as she handed Eon to DaDa.
"Hey, there's my happy boy." Cyrus said as he hugged Eon. then he gave Mindy Eon and said, "Fence."
"I'll have dinner ready dear."
Cyrus was out the door. In addition to the bolt, Cyrus had installed a latch that could be opened on either side of the door but Mindy bolted it. "No more adventures today now and you look like you's needs a nap."
